This is one I was thinking about bidding on (one that I need), but I was put off by that deep gouge on the cheek and the obverse stain. I think I'll wait for a better coin, but still mulling it over. Curious as to the thoughts on this forum.

The corrosion spot on the neck alone is enough to put me off. This coin has been cleaned.

VF35-EF40 details, cleaned, probably env. damage -- doubt it would straight grade
Does have a couple of neat reverse die cracks in the usual places, and possible an obverse die crack through the bases of STAT
The years from 1866-1872 are difficult to find problem-free in circulated grades above VF20 -- and even with this coin having some issues it would still probably draw some bidding.

Current bid is at $89, with a couple of days left to go. Bold "N" coin, I believe. I'm out - looking to spend a bit more for a better coin, when I can find it.

Regardless of detail, cleaned. Pass on a key date like this.

Again, my thanks to this community. Better to get informed, experienced opinions than to learn the hard way. Kind of like learning to play poker on your own: Bring your money; we'll teach you.

Quote: Kind of like learning to play poker on your own: Bring your money; we'll teach you yep. if you are not well versed in coin grading and familiar with all the issues that can occur post mint and buying raw coins, you are better off playing the lottery. to me all they saw was an 1871 indian head and that if the coin graded VF35 or XF $186 would be a steal. I'm not into buying detailed coins but I suspect if someone could sell it it would be worth half that. so either they are going to sell it someone else who doesn't what they have or they just a pretty good hit to the pocketbook
