Just picked this up on ebay in an auction. The coin is in a ANACS soap white holder that was last used in 1990. The holder looks like new with no scratches. The 1875 is one of the key dates for the Trade dollar series and this one is a hard find. My photos give a true image of what the coin looks like in hand. I was not comfortable bidding based on seller's photos, and the seller's reverse photo was also upside down. It was difficult assigning value because of lack of coins and sales at grade, and the coin was in an ANACS holder. Based on the quality of the coin in hand, I am happy with the final selling price. I would like an honest opinion on grade as I am considering sending into PCGS to crossover and onto CAC for a sticker.

Obvious light wear on the obverse high points, less obvious on the reverse. Remaining luster is muted by the toning. No visible damage or impairment although that may be a fingerprint remnant on the reverse around "900 FINE". I'd guess EF45 on the ANACS holder but it might grade AU-50 today. Pretty nice Trade dollar! |

I'll say AU-50, but I'm not very experienced with these.

Nice looking Trade dollar. AU would be my guess. Just out of curiosity, if someone more experienced with the series can enlighten me, I have notes here that say the type 2 reverse is counterfeit on 1873 and 1874 but I don't have any notes for 1875. I do have notes for 1876-1885 though. What style obverse and reverse is genuine for the 1875? |

slight wear on head right breast and left leg and that strong reverse show AU-53 with legitimate possibility of AU-55. Feathers galore on that eagle. I sent an 1877 to ANACS last year that came back XF-40 showing alot more wear on thigh legs and breast. So many of these have been cleaned over the years that a straight grade is refreshing. Thats a nice looking coin congratulations on a nice score its gotten pretty nutty on ebay getting a square deal. |

I'm at AU-55

Perhaps a net grade to AU-50 because of old cleaning and no original mint luster.

I am at AU-55 too, but quite difficult to determine based on these small photographs.

@Slider, Just so that I can understand, am I correct to assume that the type 1 obverse paired with a type 2 reverse is genuine for the 1875 coins? So it would be an obvious fake if the obverse was a type 2. Would it also be an obvious fake if the reverse were a type 1 on the 1875 coins? Thanks for enlightening me!

The type 1 obverse paired with a type 2 reverse is a die pair that was used on the 1875 Trade dollars. No known 1875 obverse type 2 exists, so a 1875 with a type 2 obverse would be a counterfeit. The 1875 reverse can be a type 1 or 2. There is no known Trade dollar for any date that has a type 2 obverse and a type 1 reverse, so this combination would be a counterfeit. There is a 1876 proof that has a type 2 hand (4 fingers) and a type 1 ribbon on the obverse. The coin has a type 2 reverse. Knowing the correct type 1 and type 2 die pairs is a good start on detecting counterfeit Trade dollars. The counterfeits are inconsistence with the eagle's neck feathers. The other area that the Trade dollar counterfeits are weak is the denticles. |
