Hi all,

I recently inherited my grandpa's extensive coin collection. His prize possession was his full set of all the Lincoln wheat pennies including the 1909 s vdb. I definitely want to get that graded because I'm afraid of it getting damaged (My Grandpa kept that one in one of those protective coin sleeves and not in this holder).

My question is what I should do with some of the other pennies. I don't think they're in the greatest of condition and they're in the Lincoln Cent container at the moment. Should I take them out and get someone to put them in the protective coin sleeves? Should I get these graded? Or just let them hang in this holder because removing them might damage them?

Below are pics of just the obverse of the coins because I'm unsure of the best way to take these out because they're stuck in the holder pretty good. The pics are of the 1909-S, 1911-S, 1912-S, 1914-D (trying to get this uploaded, but not letting me; I'll try again later), 1931-D, 1931-S.

Welcome to the community! Best practice is..... 1 coin per thread/post, pics of both obverse & reverse. Would love to see the pics of the '09 S VDB.

ntafoya1,
to CCF.
As a general rule a coin needs a retail value of $150 after it is slabbed. You need to grade each one https://www.pcgs.com/photograde/ And then look up the value in that grade http://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm also check ebay sold values. If you want to grade the 09-S VDB just cuz,ANACS is your least expensive.

Thank you for the tip, coin rejector. It's been fun researching all this stuff.

I'm terrible at taking pictures, unfortunately. But here's a few pictures of the 1909 S VDB a little cut off. I'll try and take better ones when I get home.

With the exception of the SVDB, the condition of the other coins would not generally warrant professional grading.

@nta, first welcome to CCF. Second, the only thing to the above comments that I would add is to flatten the staples on the 2x2s. Otherwise, they can rub against adjoining coins and damage them.

The 09-s need to be put in a new 2x2 at the very least.

these are enjoyable, not necessarily gradable. Well that 09-S VDB could get graded.

wow, that's a sweet 09-S VDB... if they were mine I would consider having it authenticated & graded, but just that one, everything else is okay as-is, imho. I guess my Two Cents is kind of similar to everyone else's Two Cents. would love to see more pictures whenever you can manage to nab them.

Make sure you flatten out the staples on those 2x2's You don't want them to scratch other coins if you stack them.

To CCF! Only coin worth grading by a TPG is the 1909 S VDB. The others should be kept raw.

Looks like a nice SVDB! I would get that slabbed for sure, authentication is more critical than the grade due to a large number of fakes in the marketplace. With the second set of pictures, it looks to be at least AU (Almost Uncirculated), well over a $1000 coin. CONGRATS!

Do you have any local coin shops nearby? They might be able to submit it for you cheaper than you can do yourself. It'd also be nice to have their opinion - any dealer worth his salt can attribute an SVDB on the spot.

If this were my collection, I would leave it just the way it is. If nothing else, it will serve as a nice memory of your grandpa.
