I bought this coin at FUN. How common is the "dot" variety?

I'd say its a Cud.

No, its not a Cud; Cuds occur along the coin rim due to the die breaking.

Is there a thin crack that runs on either side of the "dot" .... the arrow is in the way. Nice coin
