It's a solid 63 with a good shot at 64.

Looks to be a nice solid 63, and I have seen some NGC/PCGS graded Morgans that dont look as nice that hit 64, so yours might be too. 63 at the worst though.

I'm going to slightly disagree with the above posters. This one's a slam-dunk MS64, and almost certainly 65. Here's why:

1) Early San Francisco Morgans are the absolute top of the heap when it comes to mint quality. They are very common in Gem grades, and indeed the least-expensive MS65 Morgans you can find. They can be had for $100. The single highest-graded business strike Morgan, a PCGS MS69PL, is an 1880-S. Well over 50,000 MS65 1880-S examples have been slabbed. It's pretty easy to make one.

2) The fields, obverse and reverse, are pristine.

3) Digital cameras are harsh. What you're all seeing as "black" on the obverse devices are just breaks in the luster; in-hand, you're going to have difficulty seeing it, even under a loupe. The only real scratch is the southwest-northeast one to the right of Liberty's mouth. I see what might be a ding above Liberty's eye, and a gouge in the cap. The reverse is essentially flawless - just a little mark in the eagle's left leg feathers, and another small one between the E and the D.

In short, this is what an MS65 coin looks like in digital photography. Heck, in-hand I might consider 66. I would not advise having it slabbed; the cost-benefit is not there. That doesn't mean it isn't a really nice coin, though.

Here's an example of what I'm saying about digital photography. The coin I'm posting was in an NGC MS65 slab. In-hand, under the loupe, I considered it a little weak for the grade, but not inconceivable. Half of what my camera shows on the cheek, and nothing in the fields excepting the mark to the right of the arrowheads, was visible in-hand.

Thanks all for the input. This is what makes this board Great. I want to get it slabbed for a silly reason. I am not sure how the whole process works. Plus it is a easy way to have it marked if I ever sold it. I know it is common and not valuable but I love the coin. There are two real neat strips of blue toning that I couldn't get to show up on the reverse that kind of split the eagle. I just really dig the coin. Plus I think it would be awesome in the ANACS holder with the toning going on. Eye Appeal. Thanks all.

I have a PCGS graded MS-65 I'll be selling soon.. compare the pics and see. I'll probably be posting it this weekend. If you think you'd like to see it in an ANACS holder (and can stand to let it go for 6+ weeks!) then go for it! They don't charge much for grading (for Economy, anyway )

That is (I believe) the only known 1921-D VAM-1J in MS65. It's an R-7 VAM, and the Condition Census coin. Selling it on ebay was a *big* mistake - I gave up a bunch of value.

Chump_Change, there's nothing wrong with getting this coin slabbed if you wish. Even though my feelings are strong regarding it, though, you cannot expect ANACS or anyone else to give you the grade we think it might get.

I love the pristine Morgans that show all the obverse hair swirl patterns and the delicate eagle breast feathers on the reverse! Gorgeous! I would guess a minimum of MS62 on the grade. Nice Morgan!

SuperDave: If you know where to find certified MS65 Morgans for $100, please let me know. I'd like to buy a few.

I agree the OP coin is a 64 and your points are well taken about early "S" mint Morgans. I just can't get MS65 coins that cheap. Please advise on places to look if not specific sources.

Thanks!
