Posted it here since the coin was allready deemed an AU-coin

But yesterday I had an unispiring day at work, so I browsed in U.S mint and bought a proof morgan.
And then I read up on proof coins and prooflike coins. Internet took me on a strange journey ending up with me seeing the newspaper test on youtube.

So could my coin be a prooflike coin? A real proof rarely ceases to be a proofcoin even I it loses luster? but can a prooflike coin cease to be a prooflike if you get what I mean. Lost in translation#128515;

This is not easy to capture with a mobilecamera, but I can read 4 inches from, the coin is blotchy. The strike is very detailed. I ofcourse post more if you want, but if I don't have a case its just waste of bandwith

For a coin to be prooflike it has to have reflective mirrors in the fields on both sides with a mirror depth of 2" to 4". Take a photo directly over the coin on both sides. It is possible your coin is prooflike, as the 1881 S is a common date for PL.

Take normal obverse and reverse photos and I can help. I don't measure by reflection distance.

Thanks for replies so far. It would be interesting if she turns out to be a pl.

I will get new pictures tomorrow when the sun is up. Should it be light directed on it? It hard to capture her mirrorfinish other than angled, she has had a rough life this one, much toning and blotch sand bad care. Obv is even worse, hence my questions about cease to be a pl :D

Personally I love that kind of toning. It shows it hasn't been cleaned or dipped. All original.

Your first photo shows that the reverse field reflects readable print. Whether it's PL, DPL or DMPL the coin shows prooflike characteristics. Morgans with cartwheel luster don't do that.

Proof coins don't have bag marks like prooflike coins do. Someone on another thread commented on a PL picture, saying it looked like Liberty had been in a cat fight. The appearance of the obverse determines a prooflike coin's value, though all of them are worth substantially more than regular strikes.

Well here we go.
She makes Donatella V look mint

Om the rev pics you can se that half of the coin is lighter, its my mobile reflecting.
The obv reflect much light when I turn here thru a lightsource. As you can see on the pokemon shoot even the area infront of nose reflects. But you don't se that on photo from above

It's hard for me to tell if the obverse is PL from the pictures but I love the toning! I'd buy it if I saw it.

Any opinions about it being a PL or DMPL even? This last post shows that the obv is very mirrorlike.

You have to pay a TPG to give you the PL designation. There are lots of ebay listings for reflective raw Morgans, and they sell at discounts compared to the TPG graded coins. It's a gamble, since the TPG could disqualify the coin for cleaning, or give it a low grade. If it were a cc it would be worth it but it's not.
