My 1st HBC token.

PCGS attributes this as FT-3 Eastmain. When I checked my Charlton it shows the Eastmain pieces without the punch mark between NB. Charlton then shows the Moose Factory pieces having a punch mark between NB. My piece has the punch mark which I assume is a Moose Factory issue (FT-7). I have a n old copy of the Gingras catalogue which does not mention Moose Factory but show a mix of punched and non-punched pieces for Eastmain. Can anyone provide detail for the difference, i.e. Eastmain vs. Moose Factory?

I'm not sure which Charlton you have, but the 10th edition quotes a letter from James Anderson, the chief factor of the HBC at Moose Factory, to the governor of the HBC concerning the shipping of tokens not in use at Eastmain. In it, he states that he "shall have them marked so as to be known from those used in East Main Distt." I imagine that this is inferred to be the punch mark.

I haven't found any other reference that addresses this specifically, but an article by Willey (Nov 1982 CNJ) has a different take, asserting that the punch mark was used to cancel them upon presentation for redemption in Eastmain.

Thanks @blargish

I have the 11th edition and saw that write up. It did not state how they were going to be marked. Gingras and Willey both state that the punch mark meant it was cancelled. Is it possible that the letter mentioned in Charlton was found after Gingras/Willey and others published their opinions? The value of the piece is the same with or without the punch mark. I listed it as FT-3/FT-7 in my collection inventory.
