There are many new folks interested in Die Varieties lately. I'm not sure what has prompted this but it is a welcome trend. I get the impression that many of them are searching and finding things of interest, but that it's a difficult process. Thinking back on my early days I can imagine searching today would be more difficult. I found most of mine through searches of BU rolls, which were easily available even just a few years ago. Today, the supply seems to have almost completely dried up, especially original bank rolls which were so common for decades. In searching bank rolls, I often ended up with multiple/many examples of a given variety, in UNC/BU condition. Every roll had something different to offer! The result is I have many, many extra RPMs, DDOs, BIEs, etc that I'd like to offer to folks just starting out in this hobby. They might make a good coin to study, for reference, or trade with others, etc. As a goodwill gesture I will offer these for free, and even ship them on my dime. All I ask is that anyone who wants a coin please make a request on the thread, and publish the attribution of the coin (RPM, DDO, BIE, etc) when you receive it. Would also be good to tell others, especially new collectors who are interested in Die Varieties, that this giveaway is happening in case they'd like to get in on it. So here's the process: Reply to this thread requesting a coin PM/email me with your shipping info I ship a coin to you You research it and publish the attribution on this thread Simple! Hopefully I'll hear from many interested folks.

Quote: There are many new folks interested in Die Varieties lately. I'm not sure what has prompted this but it is a welcome trend. Since I am new to the hobby (2 years) and I am interested in die varieties, I will take a stab at that question. 1. Podcasts and short videos. For as much flak as TikTokkers and YT Short videos get for "Amazing 1985 Trea$ure Dime Sold for $3,779.65!!!", I think those videos have been successful in generating enthusiasm among new collectors. 2. PCGS publishing price guides for a basic coin with the drop downs for varieties really allows people to see how much more a rare variety can be worth. 3. Cheap magnification. You can now search for varieties with $8 clip-on mangnifier for your smartphone. That moves varieties within reach for new collectors. 4. Free online catalogs like Wexler's, Variety Vista, Copper Coins have made variety information available to everyone, everywhere. 5. The hideous cost of silver coins and classic designs has moved them out of reach for most new collectors. This causes rookies to focus more attention on currently circulating denominations. 6. The profusion of modern Class 9 doubled dies means that you can almost always find at least one doubled die in just a few bank rolls. Cheap is good for new collectors. I do find it necessary to point out that there is a strong sampling bias on these forums. New collectors interested in varieties and errors will find a very active and educational community on CCF. So I believe this site ends up collecting (har har) those new variety collectors far more efficiently than other venues. The strong moderation team here also keeps these forums friendly and tolerant for eager newbies, where unmoderated venues tend to gleefully shred their dreams and dampen their enthusiasm. Offers like this one are a great example of CCF veteran experts nurturing new collectors. You should be commended for your generosity. =)

Die variety identification and die linking studies are essential for the date arrangement ancient coins.
If you get a 'pass' at this level, the identification of any other coin series is much easier.
Go for it, and educate yourself !

This sounds like an amazing opportunity! I would love to try this blind, not knowing the variety before inspecting it myself. I've been doing tons of digging into the research material available concerning everything from variety types to the minting process itself in the hope of being able to better identify the things I come across. Through recently picking up the variety bug myself and having a bunch of false hits, I've come to realize that the main fault I and assume other new collectors have is that with the overwhelmingly swift access to such a vast library of reference material available online, it's easy to fall into the trap of letting the excitement of the hunt falsely project what you're researching onto the coins you're looking at. Being able to see any examples of confirmed varieties in hand would surely be an amazing way to further understand and see the differences between true varieties and all the false positives. Thank you so much for the generous offer! PM sent, Xamant. EDIT: PM not sent. As a new board member I am unable to access the link on your profile page to send over an email.
