Nice coin but like you said. Expensive. A mintage of 216,000 will do that.

I have never seen one that nice. I saw a a EF one on the bay about a month ago. Those don't come up for sale to often. I mean you can find a ton of them in the FR-02 to G-04 range. VG-VF are harder to find, but they do come up for sale.

I haven't dealt much with silver coins. Is the discoloration around the edges just normal tarnish or something else? The coin looks good, but what are the small scratches by the chin - is that just from being in a bag with other coins?

I know the guy who bought that coin from Heritage. The pictures do not do that coin justice, it is beautiful in hand (if you like the Mercury dimes). This isn't my favorite series but even I was aw struck by the way this coin looks in hand. He has a full set of Mercury dimes in 64+ condition all graded by PCGS, the coin above replaced a MS-63 example (which was the lowest grade he had in his collection)

Are those tic-tac-toe lines by Liberty's chin on the coin or on the plastic slab?

I noticed them too. It has to be on the holder. I can't believe they didn't try to buff those out or something!
