I think the 1853 Seated Liberty quarter Reverse (with Arrows & Rays depicted) is the best design:

with the Peace dollar reverse a close second:

(Unfortunately both the Obverses of these coins are close to the worst designs, (in my opinion, obviously!)) (Why does the Peace dollar Obverse model/Lady Liberty have her mouth open?)

BUT, I believe the Morgan dollar design is the best OVERALL, both Obverse & Reverse.

Any one else have an opinion on the best coin design? I'd be interested to see what the prevailing opinion is!

My favorite Obverse designs would be Capped Bust, $2.50,$5.00 Indian Gold, Buffalo nickel, and Morgan dollar.

Obverses I do like Capped Bust, Seated Liberty w/ Rays, Morgan, $2.5, $5.00 Indian Gold.

I will agree with Seated Liberty and Peace Obverses as beening not my favorites...

Best obverse = Flying Eagle cent.

Best Reverse = tie between Peace dollar and Franklin half dollar

Worst obverse = 2008 nickel

Worst reverse = Wyoming State Quarter

Walking Liberty Half, hands-down. What an exquisite design.

I like the reverses of the Walking Liberty half dollar, the 2004 & 2005 Westward Journey Jefferson nickel reverses and let's not forget the reverse of the "Demon Quarter"! I also like the reverses of the Washington, Califonia & Nevada State Quarters.

I'm sure I've left some out, but that's a start.

The reverse of the Seated quarter is okay...but bigger is better. I like the reverse of the 1853 half myself! I pretty much like the obverse too.

Some of my favorites are Standing Liberty quarters, Buffalo nickels, Flying Eagle cents and the Indian gold.

I agree with you both, now that I look at them. They are exquisite! (tough to look good if not close to uncirculated however, VERY prone to wear!)

AND lets not forget the Mercury dime (Good Obverse, strange Reverse... what are we looking at here?)

I have a difficult time choosing a "best" since I love them all. However, if I were forced to make a choice, I would probably say the Mercury dime as well.

From CCF's Coin Histories page:

"The reverse of the coin depicts the fasces, an ancient symbol of authority, with a battle-ax atop it to represent preparedness and an olive branch beside it to signify love and peace. With World War I raging in Europe, these were emotional themes in 1916. "

Hi,

I will also agree that the Walking Liberty half dollar is the best US coin design. I don't have a good one to post a picture of.

I do like showing people the back of a proof Ike dollar. They really like the design since it shows what they know about US....the Eagle and the moon landings.

What-Is-The-Best-US-Coin-Design??

Some of them don't understand why we have to put dead presidents on our money.

They also comment that Liberty figure on various coins does not look like the Statue of Liberty figure.

JBuck! Again your unparalleled monetary wisdom supersedes my paltry "not-worthy" knowledge of U.S. coinage! Thank you for your info! That's THE major reason this Forum exists!
