*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Having a conversation with my 86 year old father today about the price of gold & silver. I came to a conclusion and or realiztion, that my buying days are probably just about over. I used to love picking up 90% silver & an occasional gold coin at a coin show. At these metals pricing, it's a sellers market, not a buyers market. I may try upgrading some of my Large cents & Indian Head cents. It's been a good run, and I've had lots of fun chasing down coins off the Thrifty Nickel Newspaper & Craigslist the last several years. Going to hit a local coin show next month, I haven't been to the last several.

I hope not. But yes, these times are interesting.

Maybe a change of focus, as you said upgrading and what not. As for the gold and silver bullion market, I wonder daily, should I sell? So far I continue to hold. Definitely not feeling the need to buy any bullion.

I've slowed way down buying bullion, some because of high prices but also I think I have enough. I don't plan to sell, will pass it on to my daughter. In five years today's spot prices may have been a good buy.

Good questions that many of us are asking. Personally I'm avoiding purchasing all silver and gold coins simply because of the ridiculous high base metal prices. Speaking now to those in the know - the bullion price exceeds the numismatic value in a lot of coins now. I'm standing by, with no purchases, and waiting to see what happens.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

I still like picking up circulated Morgans but as far as gold - If I'm going to spend $5000 I want to be able to ride it...........

Time to shift focus! Plenty of areas of numismatics to explore without paying through the nose for.

Quote: If I'm going to spend $5000 I want to be able to ride it.. Nice. In my case recently, I had to get my climate controlled with nearly three ounces of it.

Quote: Plenty of areas of numismatics to explore without paying through the nose for. This is true. I might start sifting through the foreign "junk boxes" at the next coin show.

I have a couple silver listings locally here on Craigslist. I'm selling below melt (currently in neighborhood of $5 an ounce below melt) and the only reply I've gotten is somebody asking if I sell wheat pennies........................

Quote: At these metals pricing, it's a sellers market, not a buyers market. People said the same thing in the late '70s & early '80s. All markets go through cycles. Keep in mind, however, that the USD has lost over 20% of its value since 2020. Prices are higher across the board (not just PMs/coins), but make sure you don't get too fixated on nominal figures.

Quote: I might start sifting through the foreign "junk boxes" at the next coin show. There's lots of good stuff to be found there - including the occasional silver. Another good place to look is boxes of 2X2s that sellers have marked down - often half off. There will often be silver coins that were priced a year or more ago that can be snagged at great prices.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
