I am going to purchase a 1901S $10.00 golf eagle from my local dealer. I have bought several less expensive pieces from him, but he wants $560.00 cash and carry for this coin. I feel it is a fair price. It is in high AU condition with a slight scratch on it. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

It's just my feelings, but buying a coin with a scratch should come with a good discount from list price.

Hi stevep,
Current melt value for that coin is $450. It is a common date piece and from what you've described, it would carry very little numismatic premium.

$500 would be a good price. I would not pay over $525 for it at this time. Gold has dropped about 6% in the last 2 weeks and $560 is more in line with gold at $1,000. Gold is at $930 right now so I don't see this as being a good buy.

Just my 2 cents.

My 2009 Red Book shows this coin in AU-55 for $575.
$560 with a scratch seems a bit high to me.

$525.00 and not a Half Cent more. AU50 Wholesale is around 500-550; I'm cheap, what can I say.

I just bought a 1901-S for $525, and mine was only in VF/XF condition.

There's another thread in this same section of the forum that applies to your situation (see "cheap gold coin advice, please!"). My advice would be to look for a scarcer date. The 1901-S is one of the most common Liberty eagles, with a mintage of over 2.8 million. You should be able to find another date with much lower mintage without spending any more. Check out the 1902 Philadelphia coin (for example), with only 82,400 minted. Book price on that scarcer date is about the same as for the '01-S.

Also, it shouldn't be hard to find an eagle that isn't scratched. You will never regret holding out for a nicer example!

Avoid this coin. Just my opinion. Price is a little steep. Hold out for a non-damaged coin :-)
