Im curious why you thought there might be GenuineGen? Certainly in the past I've gotten old Seated dimes that show only the faintest of an O mintmark but it shows up best when photographed as you have done.

I don't know about these Half Dimes but where would the mint mark be if there was one?

You see the bow at the bottem of the reverse there Vic ? It would appear immediately above the bow or in some cases immediately below the bow.

In fairness the OP hasnt given much of a chance to say for sure as we cant know the year so cant know where the mintmark could or should be.Detailed pics concentrate on above the bow when quite posssibly we should be looking below the bow. From the pic provided I dont see one.

No Problem Vic , nice to be of assistance to a fellow coin fan.Its the same for dimes of that period (seated and barbour)Thats where youll find the mintmark.
Its worth knowing as quite often sellers dont take the mint into consideration , it gets overlooked.

I dont see it daviscfad , if it were an O it can only be one coin , an 1860 example. The only year with that reverse there was an O.
Consider the beauty of the reverse , quite stunning detail , so only the mintmark fades? Dont really think so.

I should have added if it were an 1860 O mint the mark would be below the bow.No question of that.Oddly enough for the few years they were made, its the ones without a mintmark that are worth the big bucks you really dont want to be seeing any mintmark..curiouser and curiouser.......

Or maybe not so curious........i think the proverbial penny just dropped for me.

Hello, thanks for the feedback - the coin was one of many in my grandfathers collection and is a 1869 halfdime came in a US type dime coin set of 5. The coin is very tarnished, the picture show much lighter than the actual coin. The mint mark is above the bow below the I and M in Dime. For some reason I see it very clearly in every photo and in outdoor lighting it shows a slight raised area as well. I did take it to a local coin shop as well and they did see the S. But also have had several people who could not see it at all and several that could. So I thought I'd post it to see if anyone else could see it in a photo- this is where I see it

I see what you are referring to.

Excellent eyes there.

I'd have it slabbed w/ and w/o mm, (as submitted) to see what they say.

VERY nice!

I see the S now that you point it out, but the 1869-S Half Dime has the mintmark UNDER the bow, not above it. Here is a photo from Heritage of an 1869-S graded MS-63 by ANACS.

Phantom-Half-Dime--Mint-Mark-Or-Not?

The mintmark was moved to above the bow for the 1870, 1871, and part of the 1872 mintage. For the rest of 1872 and for the final Half Dime production year 1873 the mintmark went back to the under-the-bow location. I don't have an 1870-S (it's a unique coin, worth $1,000,000 plus!) but here is the reverse of my 1871-S.

I don't see how the apparent S on your coin could be a mintmark, but it sure is interesting. Perhaps it should be examined by an expert. It might be worth the grading fee to sent it to ANACS, just to see what they say.

Hello,

thanks again for the info - I dont know to much about coins and even less about the ones that are no longer in circulation. Here is a photo of the set I was talking about, its a US Type Nickel Set not a Dime Set like I previously stated and the date on it is 1870.
