I had a question from a co-worker regarding the value of modern proof sets.

She wanted to know what I thought she would get if she sold two sets of proofs from 1994-2008?
Also she wanted to know if she would be better off selling the years individually or together as 2 15 year run sets?

I am not well versed in proof sets and there values, other than catalog value, which is not always accurate.

Does anyone here have an opinion on these two questions.

Thanks for your input.

The market is pretty soft right now on proof sets except the 1999 silver set. all the others are going for about 10% back of graysheet bid unless you can set up at a show and get close to retail but we sell them back of bid all day long.

Each year can vary in value. There are different proof sets, regular and silver sets, dollar sets and quarter sets. Until you state what sets you actually have its impossible to give you a value. I would suggest you check out E-bay and see what's selling at what cost.

Sorry for not being specific enough, she said they are the regular clad sets.

I mentioned for her to check ebay for an estimate of price, and I also told her my guess is that she would get more selling them individually, but that it would also be more work to do.

I was just checking to see how bad the advice I gave was.

You are correct. She will get more selling them individually. There's a tradeoff though in a longer drawn out process with more packing, trips to Post Office, emails, and still getting stuck with a few oddball sets. We've all been there -- we end up dumping those oddball sets at a deep discount so we don't have to look at them any more. In the end, maybe it all evens out and it would've been better to sell the 15 year run at a discount and be done with it.

While I dis-agree with the selling the sets singularly, I do suggest that you check E-BAY for ended listings and check the photo's for the condition, this to the die-hard collector means everything. I would sell the sets together in a 3-5 day sale on E-BAY and set a minimum bid to start with and sit back. I say this for many reasons, some sets might not be as desirable as others, but as a group, these will be attractive to the people who want the "one's" in the group. Another reason would be to cut down on the fee's from selling the sets, the one trip to the Post Office and check the weight and ask the post office for an estimate. I know the Post Office has a box, which all you can get in it for a set price of less than $13.00, and would hold up to I think 60 pounds, of course you would not need this size, but check into other sizes. Also the condition of the sets would have much to do with the bottom line received, possible cameos and Gems, intact packages, no spots on the coins, ALL paperwork included, etc. Just my opinion, I also collect proof sets and love them all, Good Luck, Mike.....
