Cherrypicked this 1938 DDO in a slab. I thought that it would be straightforward to attribute in hand, but it seems that was a hopeful assumption. I would say that the thickness on the letter bottoms most closely resembles FS-106 (DDO-008) or DDO-011. There are not many markers listed for these 1938 doubled dies, and unfortunately, this coin doesn't have the main listed marker from BVC. It's also possible that I'm just missing a clue that it's one of the other doubled die obverses for 1938.

Any thoughts?

Variety Vista 1938 5¢ DDO-008
BVC 1938 5¢ WDDR-005
Variety Vista 1938 5¢ DDO-011

First of all, nice pick BM. IMO, the doubling appears strong, is there any doubling on the lips & nose area?

Possibly. I have pushed the little inspection scope to its limits. I will need to set up the laptop and real microscope later this evening. That's the only equipment I have that takes adequate photos through the slab.

Alas, I don't think microscope examination has supplied any great insights.

You could say that the profile is doubled. However, I feel that the edge around the bust could just as easily be described as die polishing or die preparation common to the early Jefferson nickels. The layer cake tripling or quadrupling is clearly visible. I would tend to say that the thick blockiness points towards QDO FS-106. The nickel is a late die state strike. Do those scratches between U and S actually match the ones on Brian's Variety Coins? Rather hard to say.

Now that I'm looking through the listings again, I realized that maybe the profile doubling question was because of WDDO-004? I don't think this coin has that same kind of beefy thickness on Jefferson's profile.

Also a little confusing: not all of the CONECA and Wexler entries are cross-referenced. The PCGS image catalog isn't much help here, either.

That has some nice splits on the series.
Its a shame it's difficult to attribute.

Not quite sure what to do with this one. Since it's already in a PCGS slab, it would probably make sense to reholder and attribute, if it's a CPG variety.

Are there perhaps variety books where additional markers are discussed?
