All, I need your inputs on this. So I just called my local Bank of America Branch and asked them if they had 10 rolls of half dollars. They told me they don't keep rolled coins there and they would have to "order" them. I then asked her how much I had to order and she told me $2000. WOW! I then asked her about the other coins and again she told me they had to order them. Am I missing something?

Most banks don't order half dollars. They only have on hand what people come in and deposit. $2000 seems excessive though. Most banks can order $500 boxes (I do this every week). As for the other rolled coins, they will have them but maybe want you to order them so that you don't take everything and leave nothing or little to nothing for everyone else.

Most banks will do $500 (1 box) for you with or without an account. I think the problem is that most tellers dont know how much comes per unit ordered. I started off ordering 2 boxes at a bank nearby, which they kept up for a few weeks, then switched over to bags of 1k each. Not that I am complaining, more to search. Just ask them if they order coins for their customers and you would like 2 units of what every they order, most likely boxes. Be prepared to get up to 2k.

I knew this hobby was expensive, but I don't have the resources to tie up $500 in halves right now. I guess I could always just walk in and buy what loose halves they have on hand at the time.

It doesn't have to be expensive. I keep $25 tied up in change to sort through with my son, so the only boxes we ever get are pennies. We get fewer rolls of the other denominations, and whatever loose halves a teller might happen to have.
Of course, we're not mining for silver; he just wants to find a silver clad Kennedy for his type set and a 2001 Kennedy for his birth year set. He wants to find a Walker and a Barber, too, but we're not holding our breath.

I have a standing order with my bank for 3 boxes a week. I will get 2 of them when the carrier brings them to the bank on a Wednesday, bust thru one box that night or Thursday and return what I dont keep. Then with that money, go back and get my last box. Then I have 2 boxes for the weekend. I usually have a box of nickels that I go thru on the weekend as well.
I have gone to different banks of which I dont have an account with and they sometimes will sometimes wont sell me their halves. The best answer that I got from a teller one time was "We keep the halves for our customers because they are hard to get". When I have time to open account with them, I will make sure they have $1500 worth of those rare halves a week.... :)

I say call or stop in to all banks and credit unions near you and open an account with the one that's the friendliest to coin collectors.I also suggest you start out with a box of cents ($25). John1

If you want to hit it big on silver you have to order big, your not gonna find a massive cache of silver halves unless you search through a massive amount of boxes. Customer rolls are usually hard to come by, and when available far and few between.

Not entirely impossible. My wife went into the bank on New Years eve to make the store deposit and asked the teller for any halves that they may have. She got $7.50 total. One 1945s Walker and and a badly abused 64 Kennedy.

The hobby of coin roll searching is not expensive at all. You really never spend any money....you are just exchanging it for more money. I wouldn't worry about trying to buy boxes of halves. Alot of banks have to order them by 2's ($1000.00). The majority of my silver finds are from customer wrapped rolls. When you have funds available, then worry about trying to get a box. Start searching smaller denominations. I prefer nickels (easier on the eyes than cents) because older coins are often found. Over the last 4 months I've found 4 Liberty "V" nickels, about 30 Buffalo and about 70 Silver War Nickels and several Key and semi key Jeffersons. I still check all my local banks at least once a week for halves. Sometimes they only have a few in the teller tray, sometimes they have rolls. I'll take them all. Just remember always be polite and pleasant. It will work in your favor. Tellers are more likely to go out of their way to ask other tellers if they have any halves if you are nice to them. I'm also buying alot of nickels from banks I don't have accounts with because I'm always nice and they see me all the time. One last note, I've found that BOA are not the bank to try to get halves from (unless you have an account). Most every other bank is more than happy for you to take their halves off their hands. (account or not) BOA I stopped in wouldn't dream of letting me have them since I didn't have an account. Good Luck and don't give up!

The BOAs in my area require you to have an account to get coins. Everything they sell there has been brinks-wrapped. When a customer turns in a large amount of rolled coin, the teller immediately seals it in a plastic bag...and writes the total amount, along with the customers account # on the bag. One teller mentioned to me that they're not supposed to sell back any customer-wrapped coin. I've got a "student" account with them. (I haven't cracked a textbook in 25 years.) It does allow me to buy boxes of cents from them though. And....they never complain when I use them to dump my boxes of halves. ratman4762 hit the nail on the head... Always, always...be polite. It works. Scott

I've used BOA for 2 years now, with an account. Of 3 branches, only one was a problem, "forgeting" or "denied that I had ordered". The other two are great. Largest order was 12 dime boxes, so not sure about anything larger. A box of donuts every now and then doesn't hurt either!
