I've recently began to focus on building up a solid collection of Large Cents. Up until now, I just grabbed anything at the coin store. My questions is, should I sell the coins that I have now to help finance my large cent collection? Or should I keep them and start anew? I have lots of Morgan's (which I may want to keep even if I sell the rest), Peace dollars, Liberty nickels, Barber quarters and others. What would others here do?

Just my personal opinion/experience.
I've done it before and it always seems that at some point in time I regain interest in the variety I got rid of and regret getting rid of them.

That is what I am going through right now. In the past I was all over the place with my collecting with no method to my madness. I decided to sell off the coins that I have to focus on specific types that I enjoy.

However, I once traded some Kennedy half dollars (90% and 40% roll hunts finds; all duplicates of what I already had in my albums) for some Franklin half dollars. So my advice is that you could trade (or, gasp, sell) your duplicate coins, but keep the others for when you regain that interest.

I've discovered that when you buy coins willy nilly, you get awesome deals since you aren't trying to get a specific coin. You can pick out the best individual deals, regardless of what they are. Once you are choosy, you can only look for your specific coins, and you get antsy, you can't help but spend more than bargain price for those particular coins.

A long, long time ago I started collecting coins and just coins. Of course that was about 60 years ago. So they were just coins then. But that same thing continued for about 60+ years and still have the same coins I started with and do not regret that at all. In the past there were many times when I said to myself, SELF, why are you saving this or that? Lucky for me I realized I was talking to myself and the only answer would be mine. Hopefully. Possibly you may need money for something else and/or different coins. The really big problem with that is you may soon decide you want them all back someday and to late, they are gone. yes you can try to redo those but to me there is something about MY coins. They are mine and I know a replacement would be just that, a replacement. I want MY coins. Of course that may sound silly to some but to me MY coins are MY coins. I've never sold a coin yet. I have given some really excessive duplicates to a YN in the past, but never sold one yet for any reason and there have been many reasons.

See, I take a more capitalistic view. If I can get what I really want for what I got a good deal on, its better in the long run. I am not afraid to sell or barter, unless I have to give up something with some attachment. Sometimes I buy simply because I can flip for profit.

I collect and I hoard. However in the midst of all of this you find that you upgrade along the way and you end up having doubles or many common date coins that are worn and just worth melt value. if I believe I am I can upgrade one of the sets that I am working on , I may sell some of my Melt coins or doubles to help pay for a rarer coin in good condition to add to one of my sets. recently I bartered 3 1921 Morgans in vf-xf, several beat up Walking Liberty halves and some mercs for a beauty of an xf- au bust half

VinceU -> If you have any Colonials or Pre-Federals, let me know, and I'll take them off your hands so you can focus on your large cents!

I recently sold a large number of world coins, all extras to finance my Morgan and Bust Half collection.

I too, am thinking of downsizing a little. I have so many British coins and they just don't interest me as much as US coins do. I am thinking of selling many of my British coins to buy a nice 16D Mercury as this coin's value is increasing faster than inflation! Plus I would like to purchase a better camera.

What does your gut tell you to do? I once said that I had never sold a coin and never would. Well, I did and never regretted it. I have been selling my roll found silver Kennedy halves for nearly two years now and used that money to finance buying spree's at coin shows. Have gotten some good deals with no out of pocket expense and still have enough left for more rolls to search! But if you do decide to sell and have at least 50 quality posts, some of here may like to see what you have to offer.

I still think it's better to just collect coins and not try selling them unless you really need money for living expenses. I find it's really more fun to see how many completed Albums I can accumulate. My method for those Large Cents would be to just try to complete a set with almost any grade coins. Then over time as money and availability occur, try to upgrade that set. Of course you would end up with set #2, then set #3, etc. with set #1 being the highest grades. Of course this all takes time and you eventually end up with lots and lots of sets. For example I now have 12 sets of Mercury dimes, 10 of Lincoln Cents and many, many others. Possibly as you get really old, the future of your coin and other collections becomes a more personal and different outlook as to their future.
