I have a 1957 one dollar silver certificate in very good condition. The serial numbers do not match. On the left is G55446583A. On the right side is G54446583A. I'm out of my element here. Can any of you tell me how rare this bill is and what it might be worth?

Welcome. Yes it's an error and from a "known block".

Prices are as follows for graded notes and these are retail prices.
F - $250, XF - $550 and CU - $750.

Very nice find and congrats - If your note is not graded I would certainly consider having it graded and do not part with it for less than $500.

The only thing I am not sure is whether yours is from a "rare block". Rare blocks go for 2X to 3X the prices I listed above. So grading would certainly help this note and will let you find out the rarity as well. Also, ebay is NOT the venue to sell this note.

Peace

Pictures would be nice, but really not necessary. This is what is called a mismatched serial number error. Most errors of this type are scarce and worth substantial premiums over normal notes.

There are five notable exceptions however; two are $2 notes and three are $1 notes.

The $2 dollar notes are both series 1976 New York. One has serial B-----523A / B-----623A. The other is a block letter error with H454-----A / B454-----A.

The $1 notes are as follows: Series 1957B with serial U37-----A / U47-----A. The series 1957 with serial G55-----A / G54-----A (yours). The series 1969 Atlanta with serial F68-----A / F67-----A (mine).

Many hundreds or even thousands of the above mentioned notes are known today. Any other mismatched serial number combinations should be considered rare.

As far as value, several factors including condition, selling venue, and advertising would come into play, but figure at least $250 and up for yours.

Had I seen Ceylon's post, I wouldn't have bothered. Ceylon pretty much said it all, and said it well.

Thanks for the responses. They have been very informative. I'll try to post images of the bill.

This is what's so great about these boards - the opportunity to learn new things. I have some silver certificates and have never really even looked to see if the serial numbers are different. Now I have another item on my to-do list. Thanks.

most people do not look to see if the serial numbers match. I never did either until we had a discussion on here where one was mismatched a few months ago which was the first time I had ever heard of this ever happening so didn't know to be looking for it. Now I find myself scanning over every bill that passes through my hands to be sure they match
