For the life of me I cannot figure out why anyone would want to do this to a coin. I realize some will pay more for a toned coin which I cannot understand either. I personally think it ruins the looks of the coin. For this to happen naturally is one thing but to artifically induce this is another.
Its like finding a Model T Ford that has never been on the road, stripping the paint of and letting it rust, then trying to sell it for more than if it was still original.

If it isn't Blast White,it isn't right. Thats how I feel anyway.

TLS, I like your avatar. Reminds me of Robert Service's Call of the Wild and his other Yukon poetry. (I have an adventuresome spirit loose in me, perhaps the reason why I travel and live in wilderness and other wild locations.)

Anyway, back on topic, I inadvertently plunked a chuck of sulfur (I play around with chemistry) into a mug, forgot about it, and threw in pocket change: a bunch of nickels, dimes, and mostly quarters. A few months later, I pulled the coins out and most had turned the gamet of colors from very light tan to almost black. These were all modern coins, either clad or composition; only a few actually were in contact with the sulfur - the rest were exposed only to its vapors. I shudder to think what it would have done to my Morgan silver dollar collection.

It doesn't take much to tone a coin. The trick is to do it with panache.

I found that I have a raw 1887 Morgan that has light gold toning directly in the center.

Very, very nice morgan too. I really would like the coin more if the toning wasn't present. It's in a 3piece holder that came with a 1986 ASE and another dollar coin (can't recall of the top of my head). My grand father bought this collection many years ago. Still have the newspaper article advertising it and the receipt. Bought all 3 coins for $145 and that was then.

Jayson, for those of us looking at the north side of 60, 1986 is NOT "many years ago". It's more like yesterday.

As you observed, toning can be attractive or it can be ugly and very often it can be both, depending upon the viewpoint of the observer. Generally, in my opinion, a touch of light gold toning around the rim of a Morgan adds a touch of spice to a Morgan, sort of a frame around a lovely lady. For toning in the center, I'd have to see it to form an opinion; offhand, I don't think I'd like it, but it would depend upon the specific nature of the toning and whether or not it accentuates or detracts from Liberty's features. Judgement of the quality of toning is an inexact art at best.

Sorry Morgan for stating (1986) was that long ago. Even at my old age of 28, 1986 seems just like yesterday to me too ;)

I am afraid to take the coin out of the holder. I really need to get some of those white gloves. Guess ebay? Don't get me wrong. The toning is very light and looks good, I am just more into that shiny silver that the rest of the coin reflects.
Rest in Peace

What type of holder is it in? If the holder is a slab or otherwise cemented together, I've gone to using a Dremel with an itty-bitty round saw to crack open my slabs. About 20 bucks at Walmart. I had too many close calls with the hack saw and screwdriver routine for cracking slabs - too brutal and too much risk of plastic splinters damaging the coins' surfaces.

I use latex (or rubber) gloves from Walmart and use them only during one session with my coins. Cotton gloves, used by a lot of collectors tend to pick up dirt and cause rubs on uncirculated coins, especially if reused too often. They're also not as sensitive for the fingertips and don't have the gripping power of latex. And I'm certain there's gonna be people who disagree... (if enough, we'll start a new thread).

Jayson, I forgot to mention I was pulling your leg on the age-date bit. I'm old, but not THAT old (one is as old as one thinks and acts and I think I'm still 18, act 15 sometimes, am trying not to think about my 61st in November). 1986 was a very bad year for me (the usual personal stuff regarding marriage, stepsons, money, jobs).

Oh, the case? LOL, I can just pop it open to expose all 3 coins in about a spilt second flat. I have 3 boxes of powder free latex gloves at home. So they should do the trick, eh?

Ya, 1986 wasn't a good year for me either. I was young, a rebel without a cause and about to go into 3rd grade. Just glad that it's all behind me now....

I guess 86 was a good year for me because I got my license that year and my first car (which I still have)a 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bee. I actually got it before I could even drive it (its a 4 speed), so it was actually my second car that I drove (the first one was a 1971 Pontaic Boneville with a 455 with 2 4 barrel carbs on it from the factory) it looked like a real peice but I won many many races in that old hooptie on the blvd

Just recently sold my grandfathers 72' Skylark Grand Sport with the 455. Had 32K miles on it! Beautiful car! Green w/ white interior, man o' man.

Hi wrk4lvg

I like toned coins !! as for the AT coins in the auction, these type of coins do not qualify as toned,, they are altered coins and actually have less than face value IMHO !!

and Fred picks on me !! Just because I'm younger ,, LOL if you can call 49 younger !!

Thanks Fred,
I like it also. I have spent most of my life traversing the wilds of Alaska and Montana. I spend all my free time I can,in the mountains, enjoying the clean air and waters. As far as the avatar,it has a personal meaning to me. I use to have a dog that was 3/4 wolf. He was pure white and the most loyal pet I ever had. So your birthdays in November huh? Me to.

I am not a fan of toning in any form - natural or artificial because it is just a form of corrosion in any event. But it can be used to hide alterations. It is a favorite of coin doctors to cover up traces of their handi-work. I often look for "toned" coins and check the details to see if they were doctored. It is a subdivision of the counterfeit market.

Here is one I recently won - I will start a thread under World Coins - but the key here is I GOT FOOLED BY IT.
