I think these will be worth hanging onto. I think when they start releasing the new President dollars, they will start to go up in value over time.

There are so many being minted that I don't think there will be a great increase in value for these (though they will be more attractive than the Presidential dollars so that could boost collector interest and value). |

I buy proof Sacagaweas whenever they are available from my coin dealer.
I purchase them because I think they are attractive, especially the reverse, and I think the proof versions may go up in value as time goes by.

I hold onto them because I barely see them. Actually I never see them. No one uses them because of the annoyance of using a dollar coin when you can just use a bill.
Susan, I think any coin will be more attractive than seeing the mug of one of our past presidents :)) lol. Some weren't the most attractive guys.

My little town must be a huge exception to the rule.
I put my change out on my desk toward the end of every week, and sort it.
I received 10 Sacagaweas during the week, each from a different store!

laxmaster92 points out that some of our Presidents weren't the best looking guys.
Going from memory back to my teaching days, I would suggest those interested look up a picture of John Tyler. I think he was one of three Presidents in 1841, and he, and two different wives, had 15 kids. John Tyler was, well let's say uniqure looking.

Wow! You are right, I looked him up, and he has the market cornered on "unique" alright! And I used to think that Winston Churchill was the most "unique".  |

I looked him up online and figured his youngest was born when he was 70!!! thats not young now but back then it was almost unheard of, let alone becoming a father again. |

Anything from 2000 would not be worth keeping as that is the only year that is circulating and several hundred million were minted. 2001-present (edit: 2002- present) has to be obtained from US Mint products and they have more limited mintages so they will have some collector value. The proofs are a different story altogether and some of those are worth quite a bit. Edited by biokemist6

This isn't exactly true, as a person can go down to Lima, Peru and find almost every Indian with a pocket full of 2001 dated Saacagawea dollars. They think they are beautiful and use them over other kinds of change. |

hehe, that 2001 proof sackie can get pretty expensive. But then again, that would require a 2001 proof set to get (or you can get one slabbed.)

Yes, looking at the mintage figures, 2001 had a mintage of 133+ million while 2002 was just under 8 million so 2001 has to be circulating too. Oops, I was off by a year  Edited by biokemist6
