I must be getting old. I think I responded to a question like this here or somewhere. That is the trouble with old age you know. There are 3 signs of old age. 1 is forgetfulness and the other 2 are ?
I forgot.
As to how long I've been collecting. Lets say that when I was a kid my Dad came home with some of those brand new, silver looking Lincoln Cents that just came out. He gave them to me and so started my coin collecting. You do know those were the 1943 Cents don't you?

Well just carl, while your dad gave you steelies, my brothers, both who became coin dealers, had us looking for the 1943 "copper" penny that was rumored to be in circulation at that time. So I guess we must be old, but not as old as "Old Dan"...I guess Old Dan will have his say and embarrass us both about our "stories". He will tell us something from the thirties and that was the decade that I was born. Berry |

I started on Wheatie Lincolns, Winged Liberty dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, Walkers and Buffalo nickels....all out of pocket change...circa 1965...so in my case a little over 40 years ago!Yikes!!!! Mike   |

I'm 57. I might have picked up my first coins when I was 6 or 7, but I have not collected steadily for all those decades. And I find the older I get, the less I know.

I'm 65 and first started collecting wheaties in 1953 then picked up on the rest of our coins as I got older and could afford more. As I look back I've never been sorry for doing it because its been fun.

I remember parts and bits of what happened and all the rest I've been told over the years. It seems that I liked to go with my Grandfather to his bank and he would take me and give me something to do while he was conducting business. I would be given a bucket of pennies and told to sort through them looking for all the different dates and mint marks that could be found. I was also to select the best looking coins and replace any that were in a more worn state. At the end of the day we shoveled all the pennies back into the bucket and would go home. I was around 5 at the time. At home I got to help my Granddad and father add to and arrange their collections. I'm not sure how much help I really was, but I enjoyed doing this with them. So about the age of 10 I started my very own $.10 cent collection, of Mercury dimes. So in answer to your question, I guess you could say that I passed the 50 year mark some time ago. In fact, I'm half way through the next 50. And I don't know why, but I seems that I'm sure slowing down lately.  |
