I went to a coin auction over the weekend and everything went about as expected until all of a sudden a 1921 Morgan went for $105.00. No it was not anywhere near mint condition and yes there were three or four bidders on the coin. I don't thing these were all rookies and now I am trying to figure out what I missed. My books do not show me anything that should make this coin that price. Any thoughts, anyone?

Two possibilities:

One, it was an important VAM (variations of Morgans as described by Leroy Va Allen and A. George Mallis. I can name a half a dozen or so 1921 VAM's which might command over $100 in circulated condition.

Two, a couple of newbies got Auction Fever.

My money's on the latter.

Maybe they thought they were getting a 1921 Peace dollar.

Reminds me of the estate auctions that just so happen to have a few old coins. It seems everytime I see some and think that I just might get a deal along come some people that think because the coins are old, they must be worth a fortune and bid them up to rediculous amounts.

Thx guys, I never thought about the VAM angle which makes sense. Also, after Doc's comment I went and looked at the coin list again and there was a 1921 Peace dollar there. Jim
