Just had a curiosity. While browsing ebay, it seems like everyone thinks their coin is a key or semi key date. For all you well seasoned numismatist on here, I've got a question. Do you suggest a specific online resource the ranks LWC, LMC, Dollars... etc.. as to what the official "key order" is, if any? It would be a great resource if anyone knows of a list where value based upon a specific grade can be found. I don't mean graysheets, or RedBook, I mean something like a high to low, that then organizes them by price and not date. Make sense? |

Well... I hate to say, but "semi-key" doesn't always mean "huge price". Case in point: 1955-S cent.  On-topic: I don't know if there are any "official" price-sorted lists (unlikely to be any really as price-sorting significantly depends on grade), but you can always just take an Excel (or Excel-compatible) catalog and sort by price within Excel  I'm sure there are mintage sorted lists, of course, but it doesn't always represent the price well, even within the same "series" (e.g. the above-mentioned 1955-S LWC had less than 1/3 the mintage of the 1919-S - guess which is by far the more expensive one?) |

You know.... Thats why this community is so great! I didn't even think to plug it into excel! Thank you thank you! I am going to do it for cents and I'll post it here when I get home!

I just copy a price guide into a spreadsheet and then sort them by value in the condition I'm seeking. Keys are fairly condition dependent. For example, for most circulated grades, 1928 is the key for Peace dollars, but in AU and higher, 1934-S is the key. In Buffalo nickels, a 1926-S is roughtly the 10th most expensive in G4, but it's the most expensive in AU and higher (excluding varieties). For Mercury dimes, 1931-D is the fourth lowest mintage, and is one of the top five or six dates in fine and lower. However, it was saved in significant numbers in mint state and tended to be well struck, so it doesn't even rank in the top 25 in MS with full bands. |

Captain, which price guide do you use? I am having a hard time finding one that translates into Excel well.

I like the pricing relation of the 21-S and 21-D Walking Liberty half. Quite the flip in price relativity around XF. Apparently there were not many survivors of the 21-S in higher grades. |
