Prethen Pillar of the Community United States 3234 Posts	Posted 12/02/2007 12:49 pm I bought this 1865 3CN for a lot of reasons. For one thing, the dealer was clueless as how to grade it. It was graded Fine. What a joke! It's actually an AU+. This coin is a poster child for how difficult of a time the Mint had with trying to produce this new series. Theres a Cud, weak strike in certain areas, clashed dies, and very deep rims (the deepest I've ever seen on any 3CN I've handled). There are some toning spots which detract a bit on the reverse but overall I love this piece as a superb representative of how hard it was to strike the new nickel coins! Since the beads on the crown was not fully struck and most of the lines on the reverse were very weakly struck, he assumed that was wear.... I may be wrong. Personally, I would not grade it AU, may be XF when first look at the coin..... but I am not an expert on this series at all, so I have to take Prethen words for it..... My other thought: when the coin has very deep rim then those weekly struck part should not be counted again the coin as wear. I REALLY like the Cud and deep rim though. Thanks for sharing.
