Below is a couple of different angles of the 1882 and 1888 I purchased last week. I paid VF money for the 1882, but the dealer had it marked as a F15. I think the coin grades as VF25-30. The 1888 is a nice XF40 with great surfaces and some obvious die clashing.

So are the remaining beads, hair and lines on the reverse the keys to grading the '82? I'd think they whould show a lot less detail for a true F15, wouldn't they?

The shine is from the coins being photographed through a 2X2. I just cut them out and scanned them for the other pictures you see.

Yes, Dave, one of the key things to look at is the beads of the crown for helping grade these. Sometimes they're poorly struck and cannot be used to help ascertain the grade. However, when they look like you see, that's an indicator that the coin hasn't seen so much wear as to go into the Fine grade. Plus, look at how sharp the vertical lines are on the reverse, along with the wreath.
