Hi new here. I have been just going over a lot of pennies that my mom and dad have been saving for a long time. All wheaties and some indian heads. I have found a handful of errors to date still have more to check. Here is my Q I found this 1948 what looks like a 6 over the 8. Starting on the top left side of the 8. Looks like a long thicker line. Top of that line looks like where the 6 would start to curl right has been cut off. This long shaft of a six is E Z to see in the photo. Going down to the bottom of the 8 left side where it starts to make its turn is all you can see in the photo but there is more. What you really can't see in the photo but I can with a loop. You have to move the coin tilting it back and forth to see is on the right side of the bottom & right side of 8. As the shaft starts to turn right there is a very small gap or low spot. Then it gets thicker once more. It goes all the way up to just before the where the center of the 8 meet and stops. From that point to the shaft is open just like a 6 on a 1946 penny no extra copper there. Also the 4 seems to be dubbed it is a lot thicker on the top of the 4.It just looks funny. I look at it with a 25x loop. I can see a very slight line like it was dubbed. Have you seen any like this. If so should have it verified and would it be worth more if I did that. What would it be worth. Thanks

Welcome to the forum
I do not think that is an over date or a mint error. The 8 is damaged from something like a coin counter or roller.
Sorry. Other more knowledgable menbers will come along. I hope the find I am wrong.

Thanks for your reply Tryna. Top left of 8 it is flattened you can see that clearly in the photo.Just like something came straight down on top of the 8. The long shaft of the 6 ? in seens to be rounded. Maybe it is just a big fat Cud being formed into a 6. Where a photo of where it starts and stops.

It is not parallel to the rim, so it isn't coin wrapper damaged. But it is a "8" that was damaged somewhere along the line. If you look at the base of that device you can see the full 8. Just damaged. The 46 on the 1946 is totally different. Different 4 and the 6 doesn't have the outer loop at the top of the curve. PSD

Thanks Maineman750 This displacement is due to die error ? It looks like the 4 was also affected it is pretty fat. The 1 & 9 are fine.

I wonder if it is a chip? The 1 and the 9 both have chips on them.

Quote: It is just a messed up error. By all means send it to PCGS or NGC to get it certified if you don't believe the people here.

Jad, Coop is one of the best here at CCF for identifying error/ variety coins. Keep reading and posting to learn.

Quote: PawnS, do you really think this would help a new collector? This type? Yes. We see them here all the time. No matter what anyone says, they're right and the members here are wrong. Makes you wonder why they even ask the question. This type will only be convinced when they are separated from their money, and sometimes not even then.

No ignorance-I know I was the same way when I started and I've noticed over the past year and half most new posters are also-u don't know who your talkn to on the other end and may not realize how knowledgable they are(at least was probably my case) u learn quickly tho that the experts on here are almost always correct unless the pics aren't so good-if newcomers are annoying to some people then they should just move on and probably not post anything if it's not going to help the situation-I've read an awful lot in past couple of years and probably learned 10x as much from this forum than any amount of reading I could ever do(still helps a lot tho)

The nice thing about forums is that it gives information in bits and pieces. Sometimes reading a book can look like a big task. An soon you realize that your reading words and the deeper thought is there, but not as well noticed. I like using images as they are eyes on what I'm talking about.

Yes this is true. Sometimes o k most of the time I seem just to overthink things. Photos are not E Z at times to take. But I give it my best shot. My camera is not really good at taking close ups or what they call macro. I have a lot of error to shoot so it is going to have to work. Knowing details are very important to me on something. Whether I sell it or keep it I like to know what I have. Thank for all your help.
