So my hubs is a capt with a local FD and every year they do a charity thing called fill the boot. Where they stand in the intersection or by the grocery store and people put change in the boot. ( to raise money for muscular dystrophy). Well this week he brought me home about all of the pre 64 quarters dimes and nickels pre 83 cents and any half and dollar coins that were in the boot ( he REPLACED it with dollars ABOVE the face value of what he sorted through) and was so proud to present his little surprise when he came home from shift. It was pretty sweet. I got my 3rd LWC one silver dime a few dollars including gorgeous Presidential dollar and one Kennedy.

He's now in SC hunting for a week and has his instructions to keep any eye out.

I'm sure others have gotten money from unconventional places ?

How is this for unconditional. My father and I was replacing a toilet and we found around ten Mexican coins being used as shims.

Nice hubs you have CoinMom and glad you have got him so well trained already!
I will look for something different to fill the boot with next time I see them in my area but I usually have a few crisp $2 bills in my wallet.

My hubs brought my home a bright shiny Mercury dime once and asked me if I had any of these in my collection. It was sweet but that showed me just how little he paid attention to my coins over the years. I have a full set of them. Granted most were pulled from dealer silver value bins
but as they say "buy the best coin you can afford" and there have been times over the years that was the best I could afford lol. My 1916D is an AG3 and I saved, saved, saved and saved some more to be able to afford it. It was the first coin I ever bought slabbed (which I cracked to put in the empty slot) and I have never upgraded it or any of my other "junk bin" Mercurys. It was also the first set I ever completed and I was SO happy.

I found an 1860 IHC about 2 years ago. Then a month later I found an 1848 Half Dime in a parking lot near a metal dumpster. These two events got me back into collecting. I've also found a $100 chip at Foxwoods Casino to name a few.

I once found an unusual brown coin in the middle of a couch I planned to sit on, at a club in Moscow I used to go to every week (not anymore sadly).

Yes, I know this is the US Modern forum - the coin was a Sacagawea dollar.

(See also my previous report of the same story.)

That is sweet, and I can imagine the not paying attention mine doesn't either, but I guess that goes in reverse. he collects guns and always uses the saying "don't let my wife sale my guns when I die for what I said I paid for them" and he's right I'm clueless, I know how many there are (kind of) but I couldn't tell you which one was junk or priceless. even the ones I bought him.

Love this, I think I would be pretty amazed at any unusual Russian coins too, since I have never seen one.(even if it was usual to you)

I love all the stories y'all

I just picture all the memories that coin has seen, especially if the home was old. thats just history right there (to me)

To your original question, I have found/purchased/received many coins in many interesting and different ways...

...but some of my favorite ones are the ones I've received from CCF members here during the annual CCF Secret Santa events (many thanks for orchestrating, Santa, er, "rggoodie").

Keep an eye out; should be starting up in a month or so.

The home was OLD, at least for American standards. The town was incorporated in 1732, the house was standing then. It was the only building in town that the Historical society could not date. At one time it was owned by The Cornish Art Colony, you may have heard of one of the founding members, Augustus St Gaudens.
It was not a 'nice' house. It started out as little more than a shack and was added onto over the years so it looked like a crooked jigsaw puzzle. Found many cool things in and around it.
