Been picking up rolls of unusual coins for about a year, and the more I learn, the less I know. If anyone is well versed in what to look for with Kennedy half's and Sacagawea and Presidential dollar coins I'm all ears. I check the tail on Sacagawea 2000P, and look for the wounded eagle. I came across 8 rolls of 1962 B/U/P nickels, and a couple Denver rolls too.

Turning error and/or rare coins into more than face value is what I would really like to learn. Being able to spot value, and then turn them into real money is what I hope to do.

Any advice is appreciated

Welcome and ask away!

Within the JFK halves of the 1960-1980s, which might still be a lot of what is in circulated rolls, there are some varieties like missing initials, doubled dies, die clashes, and other little things. Variety Vista is a great starting point.

A search of ebay's sold listings is good place to start understanding where the market is currently. Print format type price guides can be outdated or represent a retailers full asking price and not what reality is, hence the advice to check ebay for actuals.

If seeking to commercialize your cherrypicking, a nice camera setup will certainly help. Accurate pictures that can show the grade of the coin and the detail of the variety should usually drive the best price on the piece. I've picked up many from listings that were incomplete for whatever reason at significant discounts and I'm betting you don't want to be that seller even more than I love being that buyer.

Good luck!

What Collects82 said... While you're on your journey, enjoy the hunting aspect, and the fun of collecting interesting pieces. One's chances of making a sustained, meaningful profit through sales of findings are very small. I've been collecting and searching across several decades. I only had one significant $$$$ find--just short of one monthly mortgage payment. Sure, it was fantastic, but that's been it. Otherwise, I've managed to break a little over even--maybe a few dozen $ per year, enough for one tank of gas annually (not so much these days, however).

Anyway, have fun. Enjoy the ride.

what I have done in the past was buy cheap mint sets online and look through them for somewhat flawless coins and then sent them out for grading. I can actually say I have come ahead in the long run and had fun doing them.
