Possible 1996 Quarter Cud - Coin Community Forum

Lunaricide New Member United States 19 Posts	Posted 08/03/2022 01:07 am Hello, I had stopped coin hunting for a while when the pandemic started and decided to get in again with a box of quarters! I need to wait for my microscope to come in to really look for error varieties, but I found this and it was easily seen without zooming in on it. Other than being a bit dirty, I noticed what looked like a "7" between the 9 and 6 in the date. Would this be a Cud error? I didn't really notice anything else unique on the quarter and only the date was in question. Thanks for any assistance! Report this Post to the Staff

Spence Moderator United States 34467 Posts	Posted 08/03/2022 03:06 am @lunar, I'm glad to hear that you are getting back into the hunt, but I don't think that this one is a keeper. First, just as a reminder that a Cud by definition involves the rim of the coin. For your coin specifically, this vaguely seven-shaped region seems most likely due to damage. With the black accretions on this coin, I wonder if it didn't spend some time in a campfire. The heat from this can causing a bubbling on the surface of the coin that might be the culprit here. I'm quite sure you don't have a die dent, which would be the only possible mint-based explanation for your coin.
