Hello,

I had stopped coin hunting for a while when the pandemic started and decided to get in again with a box of quarters! I need to wait for my microscope to come in to really look for error varieties, but I found this and it was easily seen without zooming in on it. Other than being a bit dirty, I noticed what looked like a "7" between the 9 and 6 in the date. Would this be a Cud error? I didn't really notice anything else unique on the quarter and only the date was in question.

Thanks for any assistance!

No, this is circulation staining. Please study the term " Cud".

Pretty interesting, I have a similar coin myself. I'll post a picture in a few.

@lunar, I'm glad to hear that you are getting back into the hunt, but I don't think that this one is a keeper.

First, just as a reminder that a Cud by definition involves the rim of the coin.

For your coin specifically, this vaguely seven-shaped region seems most likely due to damage. With the black accretions on this coin, I wonder if it didn't spend some time in a campfire. The heat from this can causing a bubbling on the surface of the coin that might be the culprit here. I'm quite sure you don't have a die dent, which would be the only possible mint-based explanation for your coin.

I appreciate it everyone! I definitely need a refresher on the glossary, thanks for that reminder. I'll wait for my microscope and get a better look. Either way, I think it's a keeper!
