Are Privy Marks Raised Or Incuse? - Coin Community Forum

Are privy marks on U.S. coins raised, incuse, or a mixture of both? The impression that I had from the WWII 75th quarters was that the feature was incuse, sitting below the fields within that irregular outline. Report this Post to the Staff

Sap Moderator Australia 16908 Posts	Posted Yesterday 8:26 pm In a global context, "privy marks" are raised, just like any other part of a coin's design. The privy marks are not stamped onto the coins in a subsequent minting stage, they are part of the die used to strike those specific coins. If the marks were incuse, and applied as a subsequent step in the minting process, they would be more properly termed "countermarks", not "privy marks". I should have elaborated, but cptbilly had my back. btw, congrats, cptbilly, on 2K posts. but that's interesting, Sap, thanks for that. a 'countermark', just like a 'counterstamp'. incuse, opposite of a raised device... and that a privy mark is a part of the die instead of added afterward. hmm.
