Can counterstamps be considered privy marks? I was under the impression that privy marks were added during the minting process and were raised features, not incuse. That's more of a chop mark in my book. But maybe my book is wrong.  |

Are they? Like I said, in my book. Apparently there are many books out there. I'd think at a minimum it would have to be done at the time of minting, not after it leaves whatever facility it was minted at. |

Not sure who produced the coin Above Mojo posted, I believe it is a United States Coin and a counter stamp was applied After it left the mint. Like in the same photo, It's considered a Damaged Coin, Not Originally released from the US mints, That way.If its an Aftermarket Stamp placed on an Original ASE, It's then considered a counter stamp, Not a privy mark. If it has been graded and received an MS-70 grade, and Not released from the US Mints, How does the coin shown, Being altered, Make a Perfect grade?  Good call Mojo.  |

I recall seeing him hawking something like this around the time the US Mint began their privy nonsense. I couldn't believe that a TPG would say that an aftermarket counterstamp is a privy and not PMD. I suppose that a contract for 15,000 slabs affected their judgement. I'm still waiting for the privy privy, by the way.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
