Don't know about great but the 2007 Proof Set should be a "good" one. With the 1st year Pres. dollars and 2007 State Quarters I look for it to hold a good price like the 1999 proof sets.

The thought occurs to me that we have gone full circle.
When I was a kid, and started collecting, there were NO special issues. Just circulating coinage.
Now, the Government has found a cash cow, and they are milking it for all it's worth.
As just Carl speculated, who knows what's next. Maybe a defeated "Candidates for President" series, complete with proofs and reverse proofs.

The Presidential dollar series sounds a real winner to me. Collecting the different mint marks and the uncirculated and proofs from 2007 through 2017 and beyond will be pure FUN. I've always been a presidential enthusiast (from a historical perspective) and I'm excited about putting this set together. I forecast that these presidential coins will surpass the Statehood Quarter program in popularity and attract many new collectors. Pure gold bullion pieces to honor spouses and first ladies? That's pushing it a little, but what the heck.

The Presidential dollars won't hold a candle to the Statehood Quarter series. First of all the quarters were something personal to most people as they eagerly awaited THEIR state to reach circulation. In the end it will be an amazing set of coins and a first for the U.S. Mint. There are a lot of areas in the U.S. that would have been more successful than another series of dead Presidents and, quite honestly, I don't think the series will last until the end. At least not with dead politicians on them. My only regret is I will probably be forced to buy into this stuff when getting my proof and mint sets which, unless I change my mind, I will no longer do. Prices will go up tremendously because new Presidential junk has been added. Guess I will have to wait for someone to sell off individual coins on ebay or hope my dealer busts a few sets open as I have absolutely NO desire to bring home any more dead Presidents. I have had enough of the U.S. coinage program and have turned to world silver or old U.S. classics to keep me interested in this hobby. I am currently selling off my U.S. collection with the complete set of Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes going in the last few weeks. My almost complete set of Kennedy half dollars in unc. and proof are next to go!

I also enjoy the Statehood Quarters because they are unique and unprecedented. They've gained a lot of popularity for the reasons you mention, plus they circulate well, being $.25 pieces (where's the cent sign on this keyboard?). We can expect the spending public to use very few of the new Presidential dollars, recent history has taught us that $1 coins circulate poorly. With collectors, only time will tell which set ultimately becomes more popular. IMHO our founding father's devised a system of government surpassed by none. The great men we the people have elected to the presidency deserve this commemoration. If I'm counting correctly (and excluding commemoratives), only 6 of 43 presidents have been depicted on our coinage. It takes a unique breed to aspire to the highest office and those with the inclination, perseverance, and political skills to get there are worthy of another tribute. Sure, our past is checkered with dark periods, but I believe what we have going on here is the best game in town.

I echo TSmith's enthusiasm. Having been a history teacher for 35 years, I am eager to see the series start. Terry and I agree on almost everything, however we never have been in agreement on the Presidential dollars. Fact is, we'll just have to wait and see how they are accepted.

If the US Mint was a publicly held business and you invested in them 20 years ago
You would be very happy with their marketing and sales department over the last 20 years.
But we are only collectors...oh wait the US Mint is publicly held by the taxpayers.

How about a Vice Presidential series? After that we could do Secretaries of State, and then Speakers of the House. We would get to Nancy Pelosi about 2047.
