I have accumulated quite a number of NIFC issue halves, many of which have no issues with condition. If I were to sell these to my local dealer what should I realistically expect him to offer me. Assuming that he isn't trying to rip me off Edited by unholyroller 10/10/2011 4:31 pm

I was wondering this myself. I expect the answer is 50 cents, except for maybe 1987.

I am really tossed on this one as well, if I was to take a guess, I would say their premiums wouldn't rise nearly at all due to the fact they never got into circulation really. Since everyone stopped using halves like 10++ years ago, all NIFC examples are in MS state, and will be readily available in that condition in 20,30 years from now. Yes they have low mintages, but I've already accumulated over $200 worth of them and am questioning holding onto them at this point. I'm really strapped for cash and it would kill me to "cash in" part of my collection, but am I really going to benefit in the long run from holding onto these? Would love more input and opinions.

One thing we forget....those who ROLL HUNT end up with lots of them. I am sure there are plenty of coin shop patrons that don't roll hunt and the only way for them to add some "late model" NIFCs to their collection is to buy them from their dealer. If we can be that source it would be a nice way to help support that habit.
Also....even though we call them NIFC, we are getting them FROM CIRCULATION, so not all will be MS state forever. I have heard that the vast majority of the ones found in circulation are dealer dumps from bags they bought from the mint. They pull out the gems and dump the rest which tells me that over time a vast MINORITY of any given mint year will be found in MS seeing as most are dumped into circulation.

Even though halves are tough to find here, I've picked up quite few NIFCs from rolls. None are in BU so they probably are some cherrypicker's rejects.

Quote: If I were to sell these to my local dealer what should I realistically expect him to offer me. A dealer would have absolutely no interest in them so no sale would occur. A dealer would already have a couple rolls to provide stock for customers looking for specific dates and a dealer might charge $2-3 for the privilege of a customer being able to pick out specific dates. NIFC halves only have a premium in MS grades anyway, if you got them from roll searching they will almost certainly show some sign of minor circulation even if it is just a few marks from being run through a coin counter. I got a 2003P and a 2005D back in change from a purchase I made Saturday at my local shop, that gives you an idea of a dealer's opinion on NIFC halves.

I just tossed all my extras back into circulation. Unless they're extremely high grade, they're not worth holding.

I know some dealers, when buying collections, are paying face value for much of the clad mint sets. Then breaking them up and dumping them at the bank.

They may have a bit more value later on down the road. If we ever start using dollar coins instead of dollar bills, halves could become popular again.

Well, just for everyone's info, I sold ten dollars face of my NIFCs today and got $12 for them. I was happy with that as I got some NIFCs out of the dogpound and paid for my gas. The dealer was quite happy to get them and I really hope he makes a bundle on them. It gives me a way to pay for my trips to the coin shop and he likes seeing me walk in his doorway :-)

Oh, that's great, I didn't expect that. I'll talk to my local shop, see if they want the ones I have, or my surplus Ikes. I'd be happy to get anything over face.
