Whew! For a moment there, I thought you were talking about my coins

Those are pricey indeed. But ebay is the only winner in this case. Listing fees baby!

A unique grouping maybe, but not unique coins. There is a 69 at Torex with a $3600 opening bid.

BTW, does anyone have any possible theory as to how these could have legitimately been created?

I saw all three coins in Proof Positive Coin's case at Torex last February. Being a nickel dollar collector, I chatted to Sandy about those coins. There is no doubt that they were "back door" jobs, because the 50c silver planchet was perfectly centred in the collar for the strike. The 1970 nickel dollar struck on the gold planchet was also a product of this back-door job, but it was confiscated by the RCMP. According to Sandy (and he would know), there are 3, possibly 4 examples that exist from 1969, and the 1970 and 1971 coins are probably unique. I think Sandy acquired them from Alan Hagar, they used to be for sale on his ebay site for a few years...

These coins are very cool, but undervalued, due to the lack of demand. If these coins were American-equivalent, their value would be an order of magnitude more...

Isn't it amazing how little money Canadian errors bring, compared to their US counterparts?

Same thing with varieties...vast majority of rare and fascinating varieties are incredibly undervalued...

Is all of 'Proof Positive Coins' in the thousands?
Do they not sell 'ordinary' prices to small time collectors, or are they looking for the wealthy people.

SHAFTA9a the short answer is yes. If you want common dates in all grades, you go to the coin store, or coin show, or buy online. If you want the very best of key dates and hard-to-find coins, including vintage specimen strikes, then you go to Proof Positive Coins. At those grades, and eye-appeal, CCN Trends no longer is applicable.

When will back door jobs be recognized for what they are, rarities created for rarity's sake. For 35 grand I'm sure I could buy 3 solo finest graded coins, just as rare because they're unique, and over the long run they will outperform these "errors".
