My grandmother left me several circulated complete sets of Walking Liberty's, Franklins, Mercury dimes, Wheat cent, Peace dollars, Washington quarters, and maybe a few more. All of these sets are complete minus the 1909s vdb. I know for a fact that most of these coins have been in the blue whitman folders since the 50's-60's. They have been in my possession for over 5 years now. Would it be worth my money to upgrade all of these albums to Dansco's to help preserve these coins or just leave them alone and let them stay where they have been for all these years? I would guess that all the coins are in average circulated condition and very few probably have luster but they all still look good to me.

Also, would you take the key dates in all the sets out and place them in another type of holder?

Thanks for any advice.

Without having seen the coins, I would definitely update those sets to Danscos. If all of those are complete sets (minus the 1909 S-VDB), then you still have several coins worth a significant amount of money. I like keeping complete sets together myself. If you are interested in selling the coins at some point, you'd probably be well advised to get the key dates slabbed.

if it were me I would upgrade to the Dansco albums as I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong here) they cause deterioration to varying degrees. I had an old "silver stripe" Whitman album and all the silver coins' backs was all black and mucked up with stuff that got trapped between the backing and the blue cardboard holed fronts over the years. Again, Just my opinion.

I would move to something safer right away. Have you taken any out to see what the backs look like?

Dansco albums are the way to go in my opinion. They are pricey but protect and display your collections in a very nice way. I to have all complete collections and all are in Dansco albums.

I would go with Dansco albums as well, but you should also consider Whitman albums if you like the blue. Regardless, you need to move away from the Whitman folders.

Thanks for the advise everybody! I think I will pick up one or two of these a week until I get them all moved over to Dansco's. I have not taken any out of the Whitman Folders so I really don't know how the back of the coins look. I do know that the front of these coins look ok. I do want to do what is best for the coins so they will be preserved for many more years to come. Thanks again.

IMO - you should switch. I would go with the Dansco albums.

I have been collecting coins for 40 years, for the past several months I have been
working at a local coin shop. So I have seen thousands of albums.

The collections I have seen that have been in the worst condition have been in
whitman folder and albums. I know the members that like Whitman products will not
like hearing this. They will say they like whitman because they like blue,
If you read enough of their post they have hinted that Dansco albums are better.

I have seen both Whitman and Dansco Albums, that have had coins in the for 20 plus years
and the Dansco albums seem to hold up much better. Of course the condition that you keep
the album in, and the amount of use, is going to have a impact on how either of them hold up.

So for me I use Dansco albums, with slip covers, then store each album in zip lock bags.
Of course then store them in cool dry environment.

Edit - I forgot the Key date question.

If there is any worry about your key date coins. I would put them in Air-tite capsules. Or have them slabbed.
Possible things to worry about, might be environment that your coins are stored or security. Some collectors might not be able to store all their coins in their bank box, so putting key dates in air-tite type holders and putting them in the bank box could be a good idea.
