its refered to as a BIE error. the die is breaking in tha area. I keep the ones I find. pobably a small premium in higher grades. they are fairly common in the 50's coins. fun to find.

Here's mine. I believe it's caused by a die chip. I think.

Other variations of that die chip are IIB and EIR but BIE is by far the most common. At one point, BIEs were so popular that there was a reference book and even a club! The craze dates back to the 50s-70s when very few collectors had even a basic understanding of the minting process and many thought the die chips were actually an extra letter on the coin.
Rest in Peace

I also have some of these. My question, it seems to me there are more identified varieties in US cents than Canadian, any reason?

Most Canadian coin collectors like the normal ones. Less than normal ones are shunned by most collectors. In the U.S. The errors/die varieties create more interest to some and thus the cataloging of the ones found.

The BIE cents can be in varying states of die chipping. So you may have several examples of the same die, just in varying die states according to chips present. This makes them harder to collect to catalog. Just die break down. Not real hubbed die varieties. Die varieties can be identified to certain die numbers.
