Could someone tell me what the deal is with these gold quarters? I received a roll from the bank & I am guessing they are gold plated as they appear exactly as a std State Quarter, just gold. Teller told me they were bought from the US Mint by a customer.

Just gold-plated quarters from the mint-novelty items at best. I'd put em on ebay.

The US Mint does NOT gold-plate quarters, it is only something done by private marketing companies.

My father bought me a whole set (all 50 states plus the territories) gold plated from the Home Shopping Network. They are nice to look at, but that's about all. =)

No real collector would pay more than face value for them, but I suppose they are a nice thing to look at in a display case for those that want to put it on the mantle or something. I guess that's worth about as much as a nice lamp or something.

I personally like the "silver" color of the nickel better than gold, anyway..

Some State Quarters tone a real nice gold tone. Is the whole roll the same date/MM?

Thanks for the info. I figured it must have been something like what y'all said. Every one is in a BU state, so yeah they are kind of neat to look at. I was just surprised as I had not seen or heard of them, and when the teller said that they supposedly came from the mint, it was like "what".

Guess I'll put them into storage for kids to WOW over them years down the road.

Can't strike quarters on dollar planchets. The planchets won't fit through the feeding tubes on the press, and won't fit into the quarter striking chamber/collar. You would have to place the planchets between the dies by hand and they would all be broadstruck.

They're either after-market gold plated or they could be the Presidential dollars.
