Hi I was looking threw some Mercury dimes I have and came across this one. I think it may be a mint error but not sure.

I've never seen anything like it, I tried googling it and found nothing similar and was wondering if it is a mint error and if it has any value to it because of that.

It doesn't look like someone damaged it because the mark looks like it was machined and on the reverse side the coin is raised.
Thanks.

That looks like PWD to me. Looks like someone hit the obverse with a metal tube, or punching the number 8

I'd have to agree that it is someone's post-mint attempt to mark or to deface.

I once bought a 1916D Mercury out of a junk bin for $2.50. It had the same type marks on it. After posting it on ebay a guy informed us that back in the old days it was the marks from the old school rollers. I would suggest that its that or like previously stated drill bit.

Quite a few older coins have circular marks on them like that; it's my understanding that it's caused by some kind of older coin rolling machine.

i was asked to review a some coins for a friend (a couple of years ago.) she had a metal coin container, which had a type of screw cap tightener. she happened to have all Mercury dime in the container. the container was difficult to open, because of the screw cap tightener. in any case the top coin had a mark similar in appearance to yours caused by the cap. I don't know if yours is caused by something similar, but that was a case of "i knew what caused the marks"

Any chance that could be a really crude form of chop mark made by someone that doesn't know how to make a chop mark?
