A little heavily marked up around the CE but other than that I'd say a pretty nice C-3. (As a rule 1808 Half Cents don't usually come nice.)

All of these ladies have character. I would say this one has generally retained her dignity and should be at least a Fine.

This coin looks virtually identical in terms of wear to one I recently obtained. Mine must also be a C-3 as Conder 101 ascribed. The 8 in the date is high, and the OF on the reverse is faded in comparison to the rest of the legend. Mine was apparently cleaned and lacquered though. Relatively few aged coins that this old timer has seen have escaped cleaning/conservation in some fashion. IMHO, the subject coin was long ago cleaned and is retoning. Note the lighter color in the central, recessed area on the reverse. The cleaning doesn't look harsh though, and the Half Cent has an overall, pleasing appearance. A minor rim tick and some unobtrusive marks lend to its character, methinks.

I think this coin has had a some sort of cleaning but not very harsh. The coin is slowing retoning. Still a nice coin!

Recently someone else showed off his new 1808 Half Cent that he had just purchased on one of these forums and it was similar in condition to this one as well. Problem was it was a fake.

So can you tell if mine is a fake? I think from what I've seeen it is original. I will weigh it when it arrives. How else to tell?

I seriously doubt that either your, bobbymeru, or my 1808 is a fake. Mine was lacquered as have been many older coppers. I think that Condor101 was making a parallel point that the fakes being peddled nowadays have a similar appearance. Then too, Condor101 may have been suggesting that I should post a pic of my 1808 to compare. Getting decent pics has been a problem for me. Indeed, a digital microscope I just purchased doesn't seem to work and will likely need to be returned. Condor's comment took me to the books, and I confirmed his observation that both are C-3's.

Bobbymeru, I see nothing wrong with your coin. And ExoGuy, yes I was suggesting you post a picture.

Those coins must wear out really easily. I have seen so many nearly worn flat, but this one here from this site is in great condition.

Yes Gil-gala, that's one beauty of a Half Cent! It posses a most pleasing and subtle blending of Red/Brown color. But for a few small spots on the central reverse, it approaches the gem category, methinks; this, what with the depth of detail in the hair, drapery and leaves. The 1806 is a less common date, too ... Definitely, a prized coin to behold!
