It's a "S" mint. Weird thing is I can't seem locate the 1942/41 S in my Red Book... that must mean it's super rare! Wonder why no one is bidding on this gem?

well this counterfeit was made last Thursday, so your post does belong in "modern".

Made in China, sold from Turkey... only $29 for shipping! Yeah, that's going to happen.

Hey kids. Be the first one on your block to have the newly discovered S mint 1942/1 overdate. It is sure to be worth a lot someday.

perhaps you all missed the important piece where the seller tells you that

"It is slabbed to prove authenticity, which is almost required on this highly counterfeited coin."

uhhhhh... it is? Really? Then why is there no indication of a slab in the photos or a numeric designation in the listing?

Seriously? Just because you put it in a homemade slab does not make it any more authentic.

I don't see this coin as a counterfeit. Just looks like a regular 42-S. I can't see any indication of a 2/1.

Sorry Cap't, you'll have to hunt down another fake, I am sure there is another easy to find.

I WROTE:

This appears to be a fake steel coin produced in China. Secondly there is no such error or variety known or listed anywhere as a 1942/1 S Mercury dime. There is a 1942/1 Philadelphia and a 1942/1 Denver minted coin that is very valuable but there has never been a San Francisco overdate ever for this series with an S mint mark in 1942. Please remove the listing. It is bad for ebay, bad for collectors and bad for our hobby as well.

RESPONSE FROM REPORT:

Thank you for writing ebay to report this potentially violating listing.

I've reviewed the listing reported in this email and confirmed that it
violated our Selling Currency policies so I have removed it. We rely a
lot of reports from our members to assist us in finding listings which
may violate our policies. If you see other listings which you feel may
violate a policy, please feel free to report the listing to us by using
the 'Report Item' link on the listing page. Then select these topics for
coin reports:

Prohibited and restricted items
Stamps, Currency and coins
Replica coins, replica paper money and replica stamps

Thank you for being a valuable member of the ebay community.

Sincerely,
Lisa D.

That's great how ebay followed through!
Man, I cannot imagine what a constant headache it must be--to deal with the deluge of fake/counterfeit items...of which coins are just a small percentage--luxury goods are the main target of counterfeiters.

That isn't even the rare one. I'm holding out for the 1942/1 CC . Only a matter of time till one turns up in China and makes it's way to ebay.

Oooh, the famous 42/1 CC Merc.... I definitely don't have any of those gold dimes in my collection. Thanks for the tip JFransch - I'll be on the lookout!
