I am currently putting together a circulated date set of cents starting at 1937. I will eventually go back farther. I typically hold on to other Canadian finds as well. As far as buying, the only coin I'm interested in are the Voyageur Dollars.

More than likely, maybe not hardcore collectors like some of us, but everyone collects coins at some point

Well, if Steven Bromberg said it, it must be true!

There are probably more than 2 million collectors. Every child with a piggy bank, any person with a penny jar, etc has a "collection" of coins.

OK, I'm #7 - but this could take a while!

I lived in St Marys Ontario for a few years as a teenager in the 1960s and collected small cents and nickels from circulation. Recently I bought a few so I have all the cents starting in 1920 and all the nickels of that era except the 1926 far 6.

A year or so ago I started buying large cents and have almost all of them - great coins and mostly reasonably priced.

Oops. Brain fart. Took it to mean collectors of Canadian coins, not Canadians who collect coins. My bad. Withdraw my 7.

American collector of Canadian coins here. I'll be #8.

I like my Canadian coin collection as much as my American coins.

I should see if I can get some numbers for you guys. We do a ton of research on this stuff. Now of course, there are many types of collectors - casual, gifts, super serious...then there are the collectors of circ coins vs. non-circ. I think I heard that 1 in 4 Canadians regularly tuck away special circ coins...might be because of the theme or the year they find it. Many reasons. I should see what I can share...if of course, you think it would be interesting....

Thoughts on that?

If you want an American perspective on this please e-mail me. I'd be happy to contribute my 2¢.

First off, make it easier for Americans to buy coins from the mint. I collect circulation coins but I'd branch out to commemoratives if the shipping costs weren't so prohibitive. Example, the new Parks quarters look great to get along with the colored quarter coins, but other than ebay and their hugely inflated prices they may not be worth getting. Same for the Toonie.

Okay.....I'll be #9!

As a side note, perhaps the RCM could create a survey to get data on this..ie, send it to local Numismatic clubs, post on their website, etc.?
