Hello everyone,

I bought this very attractive 1843 Half Dime yesterday. Although the toning is dark, it has a lovely reflectivity to it and the coin is free of any bothering marks, as tends to be true with these little beauties (compared to their bigger brethren). Please help me estimate the grade--I'd say it's an attractive extremely fine. If you have any ideas as to why the picture looks like there is a "W" on the shield above the "T" in "LIBERTY", please share!

Grades VF in my mind.
I think the W is just a messed up part of the shield lines.

XF-45, this coin does not have much wear but suffers from the typical flat strike and an old dipping/wipe.

Thanks for looking! I agree the strike isn't ideal, however I'm happy that the rims are very well defined. It's hard to take a good picture of this coin--maybe I'll try again.

ShadowCreator, what was the giveaway that it has been cleaned? I would think that any silver coin would eventually to a very dark surface like this eventually with enough environmental exposure.

A couple more pics:

I agree with an EF-40 or better grade and the second set of photos do present a coin that looks original. If the apparent residual luster is present the grade might be EF-45.

The "W" does look odd but like Rachums said it's probably part of the shield lines. There seems to be a stain right there that happens to form the diagonal strokes of the W shape. I would like to see an enlarged image of this area if possible.

I like this series. The rim has wear and because of the wear on the head, shoulders, leg, and shield on the OBV and the leaves on the rev. and the details are still there looks XF to me.

Thanks for the replies! Please see the best closeup I could get of the "W"--scanned at 4800 dpi:

the color of that area with the lines of the shield probably make it look like that, thats my guess.

Those later pix are much nicer and show what appears to be natural luster. I was dubious about the natural look in the original photos. XF+
