I came across this penny at my job, at a small market. It's in pretty good shape for a circulated coin from the 50's. I'm relatively new to collecting and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure this out. It looks like there is some doubling in the "957" of the date, and "In God We Trust." Is this Machine Doubling, a die error, or something else? I'm not concerned with value, I just like coming across interesting stuff. Please help!

Also, no flash in the pictures, so there is no reflection
Rest in Peace

I'm relatively new to these things so wait for the experts to give their opinion, but I don't really see any doubling. The coin still has a lot of great detail -- nice find!

I don't see any doubling in these images either. There does appear to be a die clash however, with part of the N in CENT from the reverse being visible between Lincolns' chin and bowtie...

I had never heard of a die clash, but now that you mention it, there is a definite line there. Cool. What causes this?

In order to understand die clashes, you have to have a basic understanding of how coins are minted.

Once you have a basic understanding, the easiest way to describe a die clash is that it is caused when there is no planchet between the dies and they strike, causing the dies to come in contact with each other, sometimes leaving an imprint in the die itself. So you get features from the reverse "mirrored" on the obverse and vice-versa.

You can also find a lot of info on clashes at

I see evidence of a fading die clash at the throat. But that is the only spot I see anything.

Well, coop, I think you might be right. Looking at the excellent example you have provided, I think that I can also see the bottom of the E, protruding from the bow tie area on Lincoln. I can't get a better photo right now, but I don't think it really matters. I'll just enjoy the possibility.
