They are draining a small lake at a park in my town and decided to go out a ways from the original shoreline. Found a ton of coins i.e.: cents, nickels, dimes and quarters as well as a copper ring and a pewter key chain etc. Was getting late in the afternoon and my back was aching some, but for some reason I decided to just check out one more spot about 20 yards from the shoreline near a few rocks. Made a pass along one rocks edge and got a low tone along with a slight short high pitch tone. Dug down about 4" in the mud and bingo! Men's size 11/11 1/2 14K gold ring with 3 diamonds. Each diamond was a 10 (1/10 CT.) Ring weighed in at 8.6 grams. There is no swimming in this lake so someone must of got a little upset about something or someone and tossed it out into the water. My best find this year. I'll be going back just about every day this week and the next few weeks as the water level drops to bottom and the mud starts to get drier. A lot of area to cover but should be interesting. Been going there since I was a kid and there is area where there is an old round bandstand that abuts the water and people always threw coins out into the water. Could never figure out why people do/did that ? Well, that lake has been there forever so there has to be tons of silver on the bottom. It has never been drained in the past so ? I'm guessing that the coins that were tossed from the 30's,40's,50's and 60's etc. are still there. I remember as a little kid staring down into the water and seeing hundreds of nice shiny coins just lying on the bottom amongst the rocks. There was always no trespassing in the water or even fishing allowed so one could not just jump on down there and pick them up. Never see any other detectors around the park so I hope I have the whole place to myself :) Just wanted to share. Not a great pic. of the ring but a general idea anyway.

Ya, pretty cool. Went back today and found over $25.00 in cents, nickels, dimes and quarters. A few tokens and a 1963 Franklin half. Man I was a little sore:) Going back again tomorrow. Think I can do about $50.00 in coins and hopefully find something else also. I hit that area I described around the bandstand that abuts the water line when the water is up to normal level. It is one of those old round stone and concrete bandstands. There are good sized rocks and field stones that go around the perimeter base of the stand and down into the water. All I have to do tomorrow is just move a few rocks around and pick up the loot between the cracks and what settled to the bottom. No need even for the detector. I wear hip boots (just in case:) and then just kneel down in an area a few square feet and start picking. The detector is all over the place just waving it by any of the rocks so no need to use it. Filled up a 20 oz. take out coffee cup today in about an hour. Need to bring a paint pail tomorrow. It's dirty work but someone has to do it. They are working on the dam so the lake will not be completely drained. If it was I could get out furthur and really pick all of the old silver that is out there beyond the rocks in the silt. Oh well, still better than nothing. Man, the time sure flies by when you are doing this stuff. Think i'll get out a little earlier in the morning.

Sounds like a pretty good spot now that the lake is partially drained. I wouldn't mind finding a spot like that, once I get a metal detector.

Went back for 5 hrs. today. This batch is gonna take a few days to sort through. Filled a 1 1/2 gallon plastic paint pail with cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, tokens, foreign coins etc. Not going to believe this one. Found a 2006-P ASE in an airtight buried in the mud. Had just a little bit of moisture on it inside the airtight. Weird, the coin has mirror like devices and sort of satin matte fields. Is this a proof ? Looks to me MS or PR 68 anyway. No idea on the coin count yet as they all have to be rinsed and de mudded etc. :) Bucket weighed close to 8/10 lbs. Lake is starting to slowly fill back up so hoping for no rain here tomorrow or the next day. Still plenty of shoreline left though and also rocks still showing around the bandstand. I should get some pics. of the area tomorrow and post.

Lousy pics. and not showing the cameo/color etc. of the devices and the rest of the coin. Also pics. look dark. Real nice in hand though. Slight ding at 1:00/2:00 P.M. and a tiny black spot on the upper left on obv. Rev. looks great. Pic. showing shadows etc. especially on the shield area. No dings or scratches on it though. Overall not too bad for sitting in the mud under the water for who knows how long. Glad at least it was in an airtight. So much for being air tight or for that matter water/moisture tight. I guess these bring a little premium from what I read.

There is no way you found a reverse proof ASE in the lake bed! Hopefully you can find the rest of the three coin set but this is one of the keys of the ASE set.

Muddler
Yup, sure did. Not too far from where I found the ring. No clue why anyone (once again) would toss these things 50/60 feet out into a lake. I did not know that these were part of a set. Did all the coins in the set come in airtites ? I better go and recheck that area tomorrow before the lake fills back up. I'm finding all this stuff with just my bounty hunter tracker IV. I get some slack from other MDer's about it. A buddy of mine has a $6,000.00 minelab detector. Even he was amazed. The signals are super strong on all the coins, silver and gold as well as other things like spoons, tags, keys, lead weights, matchbox cars, locks, car parts and all sorts of interesting trinkets etc. Must be the wet sediment that makes for a good signal.

I understand that it is the oxygen that causes the problem. If the coin is encased in mud, it should take a lot longer to deteriorate.
If the lack were to fill up, I'd be learning how to scuba dive :-)

I'm heading back today to the same area. I also saw that they minted a set with a gold eagle. U'mmm, what are the odds ? Estimate on just the coins found yesterday. $50.00 face value. Not including any silver.

Keep looking. Now that you have found Jimmy Hoffa's ring, you might find the rest of him.
