Hello all, I posted this same coin here a while back but I don't think the pictures were good enough for anyone to really help. So I am taking another shot at it.

I have n 1864 Two Cent Piece which appears to have a repunched date, specifically the 4. I can't find ANYTHING on this coin and am having a hard time finding a good internet based source for Two Cent Piece varieties/RPDs.

Any help from anyone on this coin and/or a good reference site, I would greatly appreciate it!

I believe it is a 1864 Large Motto but not a repunched date. Just a guess and looking at CherryPickers Guide not a Leone: 64Lg-24H. Hopefully I am wrong for your benefit.

I have the CherryPickers Guide also but it doesn't list all RPDs... I am hoping someone will have a more comprehensive guide/book.

Also, the main thing that is making me think this is an RPM is the stem on the 4 seems to have a distinct "repeat" just to the north, this is NOT Machine Doubling, it is split completely and there's the split in the corner of the 4 also, plus inside the "eye" of the 4 there are raised pieces of another 4 I think...

Help!?!?...

It looks like a re punched date to me, ask member DVCollector to look at it, he's the man that knows.

Definitely looks like one of the slightly tougher RPD's to come across.

I've been researching and collecting this series for almost 20 years, I don't see many RPD with the 4 so obvious, it usually is the 18 that shows the doubling off so well. I think I might have a couple examples of the same die marriage, we can tell it is from the later strikes as the rev hub has the top serif of the D missing (broken off) in UNITED, so that would make it one of the later strikes from the enormous 1864 minting that year. The mint was tasked with striking a lot of these and the planchets were hard on the dies, many RPD and DDO / DDR, + numerous die breaks abound in the 2¢ series, that's why I love them so much. Nice find, I believe that is listed in Kevin Flynn's book, but my copy is in storage as I move once again, I'd look it up for you if I had it.

I don't have a book for 2C RPDs, but the lower-relief, doubled crossbar looks like an RPD to my eyes.
The date is impressed the first time and the second impression is slightly different.
When the fields are polished to remove the mistake, you end up with faint lines like on the 6, or deeper, incomplete doubling like on the 4.

Yep. Gotta weigh in. I concur with the RPD opinions. I recommend to get the latest Flynn book. He is the definitive source.
