I have 7 Capped Bust Halves and I was wondering what everyone thought the grades and value would be as I may be looking at selling them. Thanks!

1831: F-12
1830: VF-20
1834: VG-8
1828: VG-10+
1826: F or F+ details

You should get good prices on ebay for them, they're popular there.

Thanks guys! I guess my grading is improving as I graded them very close, although I always seem to grade on the conservative side.
ShadowCreator- I was hoping to sell here as I loath E-bay, but I am close to my dealer so I will at least see what he may offer me, not that I have high hopes on getting anywhere close to retail for them.
I am actually torn on selling, but, I have been trying to secure funds for the ASE anniv set and this is the only way I can get the funds in time. if I don't buy now I will have to get hosed on the secondary market and I hate getting hosed. Besides, on a somewhat brighter side, I guess I can use it as an excuse to upgrade these dates later.
Rest in Peace

I don't mean to lecture or anything, but I wouldn't bother with dealers in general; even the guy whose known me since I was 6 would not cut me a break and sold me cleaned stuff when I was a kid. He justified refusing to cut me a break and giving me bad prices by saying it was just 'business'. Bad justification IMO, see below. I had another guy say hed give me 80% of greysheet bid for nice type coins, then I come in with a few samples to see if he'll make good on what he said and this guy under grades my coins blatantly on purpose to try to get around that...and I KNOW it was on purpose because the coins in his case had lower detail but were graded higher, and many had problems. He probably figured I was some dumb kid trying to sell my dad's type collection or something (I'm early 20s but knowledgeable). They really remind me of used car salesmen/pawn shop owners, rather than enthusiasts trying to further the hobby while getting a decent cut. They're nicer to older people but still do the same thing. I use them to dump bullion when the prices go way up, but not really anything else. I don't care for guys who trash my stuff in some attempt to squeeze a few dollars more.

Coin dealers are also highly effective at trying to make people feel comfortable and think that they're not ruthless, just like many car dealers. I find this somewhat amusing since its possible to cut a high margin without being so ruthless if you think outside the box. Even though ebay does suck, you're bound to get a good price for these capped bust halves(sometimes even a high one) if you take decent pics and list with gallery plus at a good ending time. Not so certain with Seated coins or something; capped bust halves have a 'cult following' while Seated halves don't. The actual risk is a lot lower than most people think it is; bad incidents stand out in memory far more than typical transactions. There are unfortunately some idiots on there, so thats a consideration. Also, if you're doing a type set, you should keep one of these. I'd keep the 1824, I love the toning on it.

Shadowcreator- I couldn't agree more, that's why I try and do due diligence before I take any coin to my dealer. I have had several bad experiences with dealers lately. One was in Charlotte NC where my wife and I were the only ones in the shop. We were ignored, not so much as a hi, how are you. They were just dumping boxes of slabs as we looked. After they spoke to us we got the strong impression that since we were not spending serious money then they could care less. A Take it or leave it attitude. I feel bad for anyone that sells to them.
Oh I know E-Bay can certainly get me more but I have to ask myself if the hassle is worth it. I've sold some coin on E-Bay and I did well on some, however I have had the hassle of waiting several times for almost a week to get paid. So, we shall see maybe I will list them here first.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, if you can get sales on CCF its much better than ebay. Sometimes people do take way too long to pay; I'd say maybe 5% of buyers overall in my experience of 500-1000 transactions (I've thrown a lot of lower grade material on there). Problem is, you can't do anything about it because if you file NPB and they pay, they will often neg you in anger. I just wish we still had the for sale forum which made it a bit easier to have ongoing selling etc....had a lot more luck selling here before the for sale forum was axed. I've experienced similar things with dealers also, its like a whole "shut up kid I'm a professional so anything I say goes" attitude. Btw as you may know, 80% of greysheet bid (this is dealer wholesale) really isn't even that much for stuff that was easily average or above average quality..so this guy was really trying to rip me off hard. That's only like 55-60% of retail. Especially when stuff jumps between grades. It's more like the pawn shops that try to buy at 1/3 value.

I remember also that the first guy had some customer come in to sell a collection of very rare stamps, guessing it was his father's collection since he looked maybe 27. He got $3000 for them, but I bet they were worth a lot more. I bet the dealer made an absolute killing off this guy by over-stating the flaws and under stating the grades because he was saying nearly every single one was 'gummed' or something. Yet he gave this guy a huge amount of grief over budging $50 even after the above. The customer stood his ground and said he would walk and not come back if he didn't budge since he was somewhat insulted (good negotiator), but he was also young and it seems they're really likely to act like that with younger people because they figure we're desperate. I guess most of us are. I've seen a fair number of desperate young people come into shops. If they had valuable stuff, they would've been taken. As much as I would probably have been given a dirty look at a minimum, I was willing to make sure they weren't cheated.

If I want to pay 50% or less of value, I go hunting for ebay auctions to snipe. I don't go lying to people I trade/sell with about the grades or issues to squeeze more money out of them or give them 40% of what its valued at. That doesn't mean I pay retail or that I'm bad at business, its just called not being a jerk. I do actually win some on ebay in that range and sometimes I get lucky and get something even better, sometimes far better, despite that dealer I've known awhile insisting that 'nothing on ebay goes below wholesale' (complete BS, you just have to look harder). If you need to do something of low character like that to survive, that's one thing, but that's hardly ever the case.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that the second guy left 9 bills out of the 50 pack of 20s which was part of the payment I got for some silver. This guy made me wait when I was late for an appointment too, then when he made that mistake he triple counted it as if I was trying to pull something. If it was one or two bills, maybe, but it was nine. Since he was old I wasn't so quick to think 'scammer' at the time, but I'm not so sure now. At the very least, you can bet that if I had walked out without counting it, he would have refused to give me the full amount and I would've been out $180.

We can continue this over email if you want, the grading forum probably isn't the place for it I'm guessing...but I do enjoy sharing experiences.
