I like the sterling silver issues from Great Britain and wanted a decent denomination set in higher circulated grade. We have a world coin dealer who is a regular at our local coin show (Fragner & Fragner) and they always have a huge assortment of coins. I asked if they had any Victoria shillings and they pulled out a half-dozen or so nice ones. It's great to have choices!

This was my pick. I believe it is a common date but this one was especially nice, with excellent detail and quite a bit of remaining luster. By USA standards it would be an easy AU50 but I expect it would be "good EF" by world coin standards. My cost was $25. Any comments or grading opinions? Thanks!

1887 was the year that began with the YH obverse, and finished with JH. So, your coin is the first year of its type.
The YH had a very plain reverse: yours is much more interesting.

Jaobler: I think you are 'spot on' with your grading, by both systems.

Always pleasing to get British silver in this condition or better, even if the date is common.

British coins of this era are an integral part of Australia's coinage of the 19th century, and as such, is one of my areas of numismatic interest.

Yet again, I am the guy who people don't like when it comes to grading.
I'll grade that as about EF/ EF. And I'm in a good mood today!:) Note the war on the lions' faces and small scratches on the face and background of the queen. Seems like it's been dipped at some point.
Still a very lovely coin to hold on to. I've got a similar one with a similar grade in my collection, which I think I bought for about 6 Pounds back in 2003. At the moment, $25 is fair enough to pay to own that little beauty. Nice buy!.
