This was sent from the mint. It's never been out of the case. Has anyone ever seen these weird red spots... These pictures show the most significant spots, particularly below the Buffalo it looks like something was starting to eat the coin! Will this affect the value?

I have never seen anything like this, but I am interested in what others have to say about it.

chicken pox

Actually, I have no idea...I wonder if it's from some kind of wash done at the mint.

I think these may be copper spots(I'm not sure since I don't handle any gold). The coin is .999 gold so I could be wrong. But I think it will negatively affect the value based on premiums above spot price.

I would strongly consider returning the coin for another since I believe those spots would affect the grade and the value. Although, I've heard of various mint defects also increasing the value of a coin. So, I don't really know for sure.

Thank you guys for the humor (cough cough, buffalo measles and chx pox) :), and inputs. Unfortunately it was a holiday gift during the winter of 2006 when it was ordered directly from the mint so I don't know if they'd be too willing to accept a return.

Gli: I'm hoping for an increase in value. What's really strange is that the biggest spot like I said before almost appears to be eating at the coin, however if it were to be any strange chemical that it would not eat away on the other spots. I took it to a local coin/jewelry/treasures store and the "boss" said it would negatively affect the coin by a $50, but no luck to the "material" of these spots. Maybe I would have some more luck identifying what the spots on with some more in person in hand viewers? What type of resource business/place would I be able to take this to in identifying the problem? Thanks again.

You could always contact the mint directly, they might have had this problem with someone else before.

I agree and would contact the mint, not for a return, but for some info, if they can provide it.

Like ErrorCoins222 said, it looks like copper spots. Pandas have this same problem. Google some and I'm sure you'll find articles on it.

I have one of those each year they have minted them except for the 2011 and I have never seen those spots on the buffalo gold coins. I am sure it is worth more than was paid since if I remember correct in 2006 they sold for like 900 bucks from the mint. If its sold to a collector I would imagine the spots would hold the profit down a bit because most collectors look for coins that are spot free. It will always be worth the gold value at the time of sale though so you really can't go wrong with Gold. When you received the coin in 2006 did it have those spots then? I have seen what they call "milk spots" on silver proofs and that is caused by the rinse from what I remember and am wondering if the rinse of these planchets could have caused spots like those on gold
