I was out in my barn looking for a tractor part and I found a 1 gallon glass jar filled with copper pennies in a corner under some straw and dirt. It isn't an ancient stash because a lot of them have the Memorial back. My wife and I bought the farm in 1980, so I know that they're all copper. Looks like quite a job going through them, but very possibly worthwhile. I can see some wheat cents up against the outside of the jar, so who knows what's in there. The good thing is that the lid is on them, so a lot of them are still shiny like new. I dont know how much it weighs, (no bathroom scale) but it is heavy. I am a copper guy without even trying! I guess I'll buy a penny album and do what I did as a kid. I now require magnification to see the mint marks, so it will take a little longer than it used to.

WOW, you found a cache by accident... I've been trying to find one with a metal detector for years with no such luck. It's possible that whoever put that jug in the barn also has other caches hidden on the property. I think it's time to buy yourself a metal detector! And good luck on sorting that jug, there should be some goodies in there.

You wrote: I now require magnification to see the mint marks. LOL I require magnification to see the date. Have fun! And P.S. I'm starting to feel a twinge of jealousy...I know I shouldn't but it has got to be so cool to just FIND stuff. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking.

Make sure to hunt for RPM's...all Denver and San Francisco coins...and, double dies, off-center, and more...Coppercoins.com will guide you with each year and denomination and type of variety...The RedBook has a simple error section for basic values on coins, rear of book. Good Luck, and, let us know if you will be selling any finds...you may find some high grade cents good for slabbing too...great haul.. Calvin

You have your work cut out for you now. And once you sort through those pennies and stuff some in your album, you will be hooked on buying more to fill up the empty spaces.

Sorry, but I don't have a digital camera, plus I don't know how to post pictures. Not very many wheats so far. Mostly 50's and 60's and. Lot of early to mid 70's. Looks like he saved his wheats even back then. I will look for doubling. Right now I'm going through them looking for S mints. I'm in New York, so they are probably the hardest to find. So far I've dug out about 100 S mints. The hunt goes on. I imagine this jar weighs at least 50 pounds.

Quote: I imagine this jar weighs at least 50 pounds. I would not doubt that a bit. Copper is heavy stuff. It has a density of about 9 times that of water. A gallon of water weighs about 8.3 lbs., so a gallon of copper would be just under 75 lbs. Not that pennies are equal to solid copper by any means. There are air spaces between the coins. Still, a gallon of pennies would very likely weigh at least 60 lbs.

Cool. Makes me want to go buy a farm with an old barn on it.

Yeah, I was being conservative with fifty pounds. It's hard to judge with something gallon size. If I picked up an 80 pound bag of salt pellets the wider grip makes it seem heavier. The newest cent that I've found is a 1978. Very few wheats, which is too bad. At least they're all copper I guess. Can't complain for free.

Indeed not. Even if all of these pennies were just worth 1 cent each, that's still a fair about to just find for free.
